Are there any 28 year old applicants to med school? I want to do general surgery or specialize in trauma. By the time i enter residency, I will be 32 years old. Is that considered too late for this type of residency considering that it will be another 7 years after graduation from med school to complete my residency and become a doctor?
Thanks to anyone that replies

I will be 28 in 2006, which is when I am hoping to start Med School. I am not sure what I will specialize in, but again, at the very least it will take me another 4 years. I am also female, so I often wonder when if I will be too old to have children by the time I finish.

I say better late than never! Sure, by some standards we are too late, but you will find (as I did) that there are many non-traditional students planning on doing the same, or already doing the same, so it can be done!

Best of luck! 🙂

28? Bah! My kid sister is 28. 🙄 I'll be 31 when I hopefully start med school next fall. You two should check out the non-trad forum. We've been having a spirited discussion in there about the whole older female students and children while in medical school issue. People's experiences run the gamut from one extreme to the other. Here's the link: http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=197511 At any rate, you are definitely not alone. There are several non-trads who were in their late 30s or even in their 40s when they applied. So no, you are not over the hill for medical school at the ripe old age of 28. 😉 😛

I'm 28, will be 29 when I hope to start med school in 2006.

Think of it this way, when you are 58 and working as a physician, do you think your 51-year-old colleagues will care how old you are?

I just turned 27, am applying this year, and I hear that while most incoming students are fresh from college, more and more "older" applicants are being accepted. But I guess if you are a gal there might be a bit more to consider about the timing.

Age is just a number. The only numbers that really matter in this process are your GPA and MCAT score anyways.

The most important question is, what is your real age?

http://www.realage.com/

This site always makes me feel a lot younger. 😀

I'm also hoping to enter med school after finishing my graduate degree. That, plus a 7 year residency and I am looking forward to having my first job at 39 (assuming I don't do a post doctoral fellowship). Crazy, but you have to do what you want to do! Good luck, and remember, age is just a number.

I just turned 27, will be 28 for the 2006 school year. My theory is you only live once.. why waste your time in an unfulfilling career? when you think about it, 4 years isn't that much out of your life.

I am a little worried about having kids, guess I'll just have to find a stay at home dad! 😉

You are a youngun compared to of my friends that want to do surgery.

I have a friend who is in UMiami SOM planning on doing general surgery eventually. She happens to be 38 now as she starts MS2.

I have another friend who is 39 and will start med school in the fall. he wants to be a trauma surgeon.

So to answer the original question, yes there are others like you who go back and decide to do surgery despite the age factor and years involved.

If you want to do it, go for it. I'm 31 and fixin' to start my general surgery residency in two weeks (+/- fellowship)...i don't think i'm too old (on most days!) for the demands of this training and am not overly concerned that i'll be 36-38 yo before i'm practicing in the "real world". Wish you the best of luck!
