it's obvious that getting honors in every course would really help in getting a desired residency. but out of curiosity, how much weight is given to the basic sciences courses compared to those supplemental courses (e.g.-patient-doctor relationship, etc.) when it comes to applying for residency?

With your name, "medorbust" i wonder if you are a premedical student.

I think it is a good idea to get the premed juice out of one's system. I suggest that what you learn in the classes (basic science or otherwise) is important. Most medical schools do not give grades for classes, only pass/fail, or honors/pass/fail. The "supplemental" classes are integrated into the basic science curriculm and they are not evaluated separately.

If you prefer short-term gratification, then realize that the "supplemental" classes are included on the USMLE Step I in the form of behavioural sciences. Arguably, this exam has more weight than much of the basic sciences curriculm.

My understanding (based on reading and discussion with advisors) is that pre-clinical grades matter very little. Grades in core clerkships are of prime importance, along with Step 1 score. Some specialties put added emphasis on other aspects (research, performance in a sub-internship, letters from Nobel Prize winners, etc.).

If you're starting to strategize for the residency, reading Iserson's Getting Into a Residency (http://www.galenpress.com/30-9.html) will answer a lot of questions.

Getting A's in ur basic sciences would be a good idea, cuz that will help u master the info u need to ace the USMLE (which matters alot)

but.. grades just for the sake of grades prolly not as big of a deal, unless u are in the top 15% or AOA or something..

agreed. take another poster's advice and check out Iserson's residency book. it actually has the aspects of the applicants application (ie. USMLE 1, 2, basic science grades, clerkships, LORs, research, etc.) broken down and ranked by which is most important to residency directors in various medical specialties.

pre-clinical grades are ranked lower for most specialties, if i remember correctly.

Even better, go to a school with pass/fail for the basic science years.
