I was wondering if anyone else is done in Dec. and what your plans are.

I have NO IDEA what to do.... Here is what I have so far...

1.Teach High School (Dear God please keep the 17 year-olds ugly and non-tempting)

2. Lab Tech some place.

3. Work in a dental office and get my expanded duties here in Gainesville.

Any thoughts?

any of those are viable options; the 3rd would probably be the best just so you can get a few months of seeing how a dental practice is run.

you can use one of any number of temporary employment services and they can match you up with a multitude of jobs.

perhaps a woman who works at a dental office gets pregnant and once she gets 6 months in decides to take 6 or 8 months off to deliver and nurse the baby for the first few months. well... you fill in and about the time you are ready to leave, she will be ready to get her job back.

things like this happen all the time.

just search for temporary job agencies. i think kelly services is one of the biggest.

hey superc....i am in the same boat. I am looking all over the place like crazy for jobs....it is just really hard to find something that i actually want to do. I am actually applying for a position in a dental office where the assistant is pregnant and will be on leave from december to april or longer, hopefully that will work out. Otherwise I have been thinking about working at a daycare center, i like kids. I am also going to be traveling for about a month so that will be part of my leave for school. I am worried that they might see it as a bad thing if i just graduate and have nothing to do, but as long as we are doing something worthwhile, even if it is just making money to save for D school, i think it will be okay.
just dont sit on your ass for 6 months and watch tv or play video games and you are straight.

dental schools aren't going to frown upon you doing nothing between december and august. and in all likelihood you will be busy finding a place to live, starting a new life, etc.

i doubt dental schools frown upon people completing a degree in 3.5 years. just like they don't frown upon people who take 5 years to finish, or who take a year off between school and dental school.

i'll graduate NEXT december and my very kind and rich uncle has 6 weeks of vacations for me planned... including a week in vegas (dream come true) a 14 day cruise, and 12 days in europe. i told him i'd rather just have him cover my D1 year, but he wants me to have some fun before i strap down (he is a doctor and remembers medical school and thinks it is important to do some of these things now because it "will be decades" before i enjoy life. hopefully he is exaggerating... but yeah...

if you graduate in december and want to play videogames for 6 months, by all means, do it. it may be the only time you get to play the new Xbox because the NEXT xbox and playstations will be out by the time you get on your feet with a dental job!

Enjoy your break...and maybe make a little cash. Dental school is hard enough for four years. 🙂

I appreciate the input everyone!

I have to tell you that I think I am going for the teaching option. I have spent more time assisting than I care to share, and as much as I like dentistry, there is only so much assisting one person can take.

I know it would "look" better, but hell I already applied and I can't edit my app, so onward! Who knows maybe I'll love it and become that guy from Summer School.... Shoope (who knows how to spell it)

That's Mr. SuperC to you naughty 17 year-old ladies!

I'll be done in December as well. I've been thinking about what to do also and am still undecided. I'll probably end up getting a job to save some money in the beginning and then take a nice vacation somewhere with the money I earned before all hell breaks loose in dental school... 🙄

Same here! And I keep feeling that 9 months is an awkward span of time - which jobs will hire me just for 9 months? (I feel bad neglecting to tell them that, especially if it involves training). Also, I'm visiting my sister in Alaska for 10 days, so there goes even more chances!

I'm definitely going to get a job and just relax in an apartment....It is CRUCIAL that I'm as bored as possible before dental school, and ideally not doing anything medical. I think it's important for everyone to get a bit of refreshment so that we can head into D-school with an open mind, thrilled at the thought of enormous amounts of science and stress 🙂

Hey CJ, how did genetics work out? (its Doug)
I'm in a bit of a debacle in that I'm deciding to take immunology, notorious for it's 40% drop rate, or genetics again...
Physics goin well? Haven't seen ya around man, take care...

Have you considered smoking dope and playing X-Box for 8 months? Just a suggestion.

Honestly, I agree! I mean, maybe I'd just as easily "eat sushi and play board games" or "get drunk and play online chess", but I realize that this will be the last time in a LOOONG while I'll have so much free time.

Even some of the students I spoke to during interviews said the same thing....do as little as possible.

yeah, i'm thinking about the teaching option too....I was thinking about substitute teaching because I don't really have any official teaching credentials. Also, you can always go back to technical school or something and try something out for fun like financing or automotive tech or art or whatever is low stress but fun...
