What happens now??? Everyone else has their orders and is making arrangements. Do I just stay here till next year when assignments come up again?

What do you mean 'Efmp canceled" your orders? By EFMP, you mean the 'Exceptional Family Member Program', in which you have a family member enrolled? And they cancelled your orders b/c your destination command was not suitable for your EFM?

Yes that Efmp. They said my child with a mild psychiatric condition was "not fit to travel" to my assigned base because the base doesn't have child psych. There was nothing more than that so I don't know what happens now.

That's odd. The whole point of the EFMP program, is to prevent your from getting orders to a destination where they cannot accommodate your EFM. If it's true that they had no child psychiatrist, you shouldn't have gotten said orders in the first place....of course, this is how it's supposed to work in theory.

Did you want said orders?

Yeah, I would guess you could stay stashed wherever you are now, then get new orders at some point in the future. And for the future, if your child's condition is really mild and doesn't warrant him/her being in EFMP, you might consider dis-enrolling from the program. The program can 'hurt' you sometimes.

I did want this base because it is close to my family. Aspergers/speech delay is an auto-Efmp per my base SNC. I thought it would be ok if there was a provider in the community but I guess not

There is no longer an "Aspergers" diagnosis; it all falls under autism. And some OCONUS locations don't have access to child psych or ABA therapy, and therefore would be a disqualifying condition. There is no "mild" case of this that would be treated by a general pediatrician. That's a disservice to the child and not the standard of care in the US, which is why the EFMP program exists.

Your specialty leader/consultant (in consultation with the detailed/orders writers) will be working to find a new place for you. It could be where you are now or it could be some place completely different that you really don't like. Your specialty leader is probably not going to be the happiest person in the world about this because this should have been well known/communicated before assignments were made and now they are going to have to scramble to find a place for you. If there are no open billets at a location you need to be they may have to move someone who is already there and not expecting to move. They may be able to "double stuff" a billet, but that's harder these days. The other, really bad and unlikely, scenario is they make you move without your family.

You need to talk to your program director and specialty leader/advisor ASAP!!

I have a friend with a couple of EFMP family members who has done several moves. He said he is able to sign a waiver for a location he wants to go to even though it may not be an EFMP location.

I'm familiar with this tactic. either the SM states they will go unaccompanied and later their family joins them anyway or they waive it and then come to the clinic b*tching about poor care, long drives to specialists and lack of community resources. EFMP is like any government program but it tends to work well when everyone uses it like they are supposed to. scrubbing records before moves should be routine-- this is an instance of the system working. normally consultants will ask for you to pick of a list of potential duty stations and tell them any EFMP issues. perhaps yours forgot the EFMP part.

They have done it to take career enhancing positions. To be honest I think they enrolled the kids legitimately when they were much younger, but don't need as much extra support now. Same for his wife, who was in a horrific accident, but is now doing quite well. I am definitely not an expert on EFMP ...

Happened where I was previously at as well. Then upset we don't have specialists on the island to deal with it. Sorry, you're not command-sponsored at that point and you bear the cost of getting to the care you need.

Somewhat accusatory responses here... I told my assignment officer I had a dependent in EFMP. They didn't ask any further questions and I assume they thought the CONUS base I was assigned to was ok. It is not a remote base but at the same time it is not near a metropolis. Maybe if they didn't wait till April to give us our assignments they wouldn't be in this situation.

At least in the Navy it seems to be that you always have the option to waive EFMP recs for a CONUS base. Only OCONUS locations can actually say no of you really want to go.

It's also possible that the EFMP status of the location changed. My location's ABA availibility seems to change from hour to hour.

in that case you've done your part and it's on him/her to send you to a place that can accommodate your EFMP needs. which usually is something more robust or within an hour or two of civilization.

unless things have changed, in the army the accepting MTF must approve EFMP moves. doesn't always happen but it's supposed to. it's how we keep transplant patients and technology dependent kids away from ft leonard wood, ft polk, ft irwin, etc.

my favorite EFMP failure case was a 12 year old heart transplant patient that came into the ER febrile with splinter hemorrhages. yeah, he shouldn't have been there.

Ha! I had one that was just about as bad, but the MSG wanted to be a SGM so he cooked the books. They were mad at me that they had to travel 4 hours round trip to KC for specialty care 3 times per month. Like I'm the one who put Fort Riley in the middle of nowhere.
