I am a MSIV who is currently completing an Anesthesiology elective at Grandview. This month has been a mixed bag, educationally speaking. The didactic knowledge of most of the attendings I have dealt with has been top-notch, and not just in the Anesth. department. However, I have been seriously frustrated at how little "hands-on" experience that I've been able to get...which is a weird concept, especially at a teaching hospital. 😕 There are so many students around (who may be visiting or "stationed" here in Dayton) that I wonder if some of the staff knows what to do with students that are motivated and aren't just trying to do the minimum to get by on a given rotation.
Dayton is a pretty underwhelming city, in terms of stuff to do, and Grandview is in a pretty shady neighborhood. As long as you are willing to drive to get to other areas, you should find enough to keep yourself entertained. Ask some of your fellow students & residents about places to go & things to do...most will offer suggestions. As for housing, you could always opt to stay in the Grandview Housing (aka "the Hilton"). It's pretty bare-bones, but it's a 1-minute walk to hospital, so it's nice & close.
Best of luck!! 👍
