I keep reading how so many people think that they have or had outstanding letters of recommendation. How do you really know when you're not even supposed to read them? Do you just assume that the person writing them is saying something terrific about you? I'm from a small school and we get to know our professors well, but you just don't ever really know unless you get to read the LORs.

What you've said is true.

Many letter writers will show you what was written or tell you what was written. Some even ask you to write your own letter and then he/she will sign it.

If you can get a letter from someone reputable with good understanding of what medical school entails and a great knowledge of who you are, I'd say you'll have a good LOR.

Also if your interviewer tells you that your letters were excellent then you know...but you are right there is really no way to know unless you have actually seen them.
