Anyone know what the best choice is in NYC for surgery prelims? Good housing and not too painful?

Something I could scramble into versus doing a medicine program that sucks (ie, Brooklyn hospital)...

Yeah right...

A prelim General Surgery year in New York City? You'll get scutted out and beaten on for just about everyday for the whole year...

And I can name maybe three programs in New York City proper that offers housing options to residents, but I'm not sure if that includes prelim interns.

That was extremely helpful.

Seriously, I may need to scramble and I don't want to move twice... I'm hoping to match into anesthesia in NYC and I want a list of three back-up prelims with housing and reasonable <100 hours per week... Thanks.

As I said, I don't know if these programs offer housing to their prelim interns, but they have housing:

1) Beth Israel
2) Lenox Hill
3) Cabrini (is that program still open?)
4) Cornell

You should understand that while all programs in New York are compliant on paper, most are not in reality. I don't mean to mention any of these programs as non-compliant, but the fact is the culture in General Surgery is you go home when the work is done -- NOT when the clock strikes a certain hour.

I would seriously reconsider a General Surgery preliminary position, if I were you.

Good luck.

ive interviewed at several nyc programs that are work hours compliant, they are constantly under the watch of the Bell Commission

Im looking at prelim surgery too as a back up in nyc, you can PM me if you want, but definitely check out St Lukes Roosevelt (very work hrs compliant, great housing, for prelims too), St Vincents (their housing is up in the air) and Mt Sinai (very friendly for prelims, housing, work hrs). those would be my manhattan picks for prelim, in addition to Beth Israel NYC as someone else mentioned.

good luck!!

So are prelims guaranteed housing at Sinai and Beth Israel? Anyone know?
