Hello everyone!

Want some news? Want some good news? Well, here it is!! I'm now officially accepted at Nova Southeastern University and.......I'm also accepted NYU!!!!

My interview day at NYU was cool and my interviewer accepted me right on the spot at the end of my interview!!

Here's the scoop:

8:00 - 9:30 AM: Continental breakfast and interviews. There were total of 10 of us and two didn't show! The interview were one on one with a faculty member or Amy knowles (Assistant Admissions Director). My interviewer was a professor in Endodontics, Dr. Weiselberg. You guys, this guy is the most blunt, straight shooter that I have ever met in my entire life, here how my interview went:

Intro: I was sitting in a room with a desk in front of me and Dr. W. walked in and sat directly across from me on the other side of the desk....without introduction or greetings he bluntly asked me (NO EXAGGERATION or EDITED words)

Dr. W: What the fuc# happened to you the first three years of college?

Me: (thinking to myself)...holy shi#, what did I get myself into?!

Dr. W: (points to my undergraduate GPA in my NYU application summary made by Amy Knowles) This is the lowest GPA I've ever seen!! You don't deserve to be here!!

Me: (still thinking to myself)...holy fuc#..(I then proceeded to gather my words.) I know...I'm honored to be here.

Dr. W: What happened to you in college? Why did you even go to college?

Me: (still shocked at his words)....ah..ah..

Dr. W: How old are you?

Me: 27...

Dr. W: Oh, you're a LATE bloomer, huh?

Me: Yes, I matured through my undergraduate collegiate career.

To make long story short, I was grilled for 20 minutes with questions and general ones like:

Why dentistry?
What is(are) your strength(s) and weakness(es)?
Why NYU?
Did you get accepted to any other schools? (I told him yes at Nova and he said to me, "You're lucky!")

He was harsh, but sincere! He's a straight shooter and didn't beat around the bush! Every time he asked a question, I tried to answer it and next thing I knew, he had asked another question to cut off my answer to the previous question!

Towards the end, Dr. W. said to me, "I'll be right back, I need to talk with my colleague who's also on the committee about your application!" After 5 minutes of silent sitting, still in shock about my interview, Dr. W. returns.

Dr. W: I talked to my colleague and she wanted me to make a decision on you!

Me: .........(holy shi#!!)

Dr. W: What I say in this committee, GOES!!! No discussion will be made on you! If I want you, you're in! If I don't want you, you'll never be here at NYU, you hear me? You understand?

Me: Ah..ah...yes, I do, Doc!

Dr. W: I have to make a decision on you today!! Tell me why I should accept you?

Me: (thinking, fuc#, finally I have an opportunity to sell myself, since he never gave me a chance to finish any of my answers to his earlier questions, here's what I said [short version])....Well Doc, I've tasted both academic failure and success! I know what they both feels like and I refuse to fail with my current determination to become a dental medical doctor....what you see on the paper is a reflection of my past and that is not the current me...blah..blah..blah...

Dr. W: (looks at me intensely) What's your name? Andy?...I'll tell you what...I like the way you talk...I like you...are you going to disappoint me next year? If you fail me next year, I'll personally throw you out the window (NYU is a 11 floor building, we were on the 10th floor)! (at that time, on the back of the interview evaluation that he's been filling out this entire interview, there were three boxes on the bottom: Attend, Waitlist, and Denial. He checked the "ATTEND" box)

Me: (watched him checking the "ATTEND" box, ASTONISHED and replied...) I'll pick out a window myself if I fail!

We shooked hands and we smiled and he says, "you passed!"

Advice: if you EVER get an interview with Dr. Wieselberg for your NYU interview, good luck to you my friend. If he likes you then you're in, if he doesn't, then you're history! Be stern with him and don't fold. I kept on addressing him as "DOC" and voiced my situation. I even try to joke with him and saw him cracked a smile or two! Wow, I've had a two-on-one interview, a three-on-four interview, but never a harch, blunt, and such a direct interview!

NYU positives:

1) I like the school (building and curriculum)

2) facilities, I give it a 8 out of 10 (Nova being a 10). NYU's 10th and 11th floor is speechless! Brand spanking new equipment!! WOW!! Better than Nova on the 11th floor, believe it or not!

3) I like the student body diversity! How can you not, right, with 220 students!

4) Vitalbook (DVD-ROM) technology

NYU NEGATIVES:

1) Cost of attendance (~$260,000 for 4 years)

2) Leasing/rent equipments and tools

Overall, I truely do not believe that NYU is as bad as everyone thinks or states! I liked the school! But guess what?

I GOING TO NOVA!!!!!!

I can't stop posting!!??? My fingers are like on "AUTO" as soon as I sit on my computer chair! Actually I partied like a rock star in NYC on Friday night!

Tonight I have to study for my Medical Physiology II exam on Monday, it's my first physio exam for this Spring quarter! I should drop out of school now since I'm in for 2002!? Maybe I'll just keep Med. Physio II and Immuno for this quarter and go part-time! Yeah, I'll drop my other courses...good idea, Andy!

Reena,

Very good! "YAH-ZZZ" is how you would pronounce "teeth" in Chinese (Mandarin). Are you Chinese?

yah-zzz,

in fact, i am chinese. but i have a very basic knowledge of mandarin, probably that of a two-year old. i do want to point out that if you phonetically sounded out your sign-on name in catonese, it takes on a total different meaning.

yah(t)-zzz's literal translation in catonese means "eat shi*".

Beagle and Reena,

I don't speak Cantonese, but I do like Beagle's suggestion, you're right, "YAH-E", does mean dentist in Chinese! I'm going to change my screen name to that now!! Thanks!! Good call!!!!!!

Congrats on the acceptance!!! I am very happy for you! Have fun in the FL sun

As for Dr. W, I had him too. He was definitely a "different" interviewer and I cna't believe he started the interview like that, but it is awesome that he told you then and there that you were in. Congrats!!

Andy,

That's cool that you said "Yah-E-sun"!! That's what we will all be!! If I get into Temple, I will still go to Nova! I've decided, if Temple want to take their sweet 'O time, then that's their lost! I feel pretty good about Temple, I left a good impression there and I believe that I will eventually get accepted once the admissions committee finishes their thing! I've decided, I'm going with Nova!

And also, "Yah-E" is also Mandarin, but I like "Yah-E-sun" too!

Reena, "eat shi#" is actually pronounced "Y'all-szee", I don't know it's tough to type it out! But I see where you're coming from. Mandarin is the same thing.

I see that I have plenty of "brothers" and "sisters" in this forum!!

Hey A!
Congrats on two acceptances in one day. That's awesome. You cracked me up! Dr. W sounds like my boss long lost brother. It's kind of unfortunate to have that kind of interviewer. But on the other hand, I like those kind of blunt. Just tell me if I'm in or out, don't make me wait. Oh...oh, that's so funny. Now, go drop all the classes and have some fun before school starts.
Hopefully that I'll see you next year @ Nova. Fun in the sun, way to go man!
Uh, how come your name from Yah-ZZZZZZZZ to Yah-E.
I'll just call you A from now on.

T, Honey,

You can call me what ever you like, baby!! I switched my name from "Yah-ZZZ" (pronounciation for the word "teeth" in Chinese) to "Yah-E" ("dentist" in Chinese) because Reena thought my name was "eat shi#" in Chinese! :(

So I changed it! I'll look forward in meeting you next year during your interview! Study hard for the DAT.

I wanted to change it, "YAH-E" is much cooler! Don't worry, no offense taken! Thanks for pointing it out to me though.

Yah-E whats going on?
What are your stats like if you dont mind me asking? You are obviously a strong interviewer and you most likely had a good DAT score. So out of curiosity for all the people that are not getting in, what made your application stand out?

Congratulations

I’m still trying to figure out why this thread was dug up and bumped?

Yah-E was the founder of the original “Under 3.0 club” back in 2001 based on his success story. http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=28491

Yeah, this is a hella old post. Yah-E was the "poster child" for the sub 3.0 club and now he's gonna be an OS! He gave a lot of hope on SDN.
