Volunteer on sexual assault hotline? is it meaningless, or would it make you "unique"?
How long have you volunteered? How many/types of calls have you received? Would your boss write you a positive LOR? Do you feel that you have learned anything from this? Why sexual assuault? (instead of suicide or a quitline?)

HINT: Answer these questions in your essay describing this experience.

Pip, that one's a positive EC. Make sure you get clinical ECs, too - that is not a substitute for clinical experience but it does show a commitment to helping others.
Do ECs that you enjoy - those will make you unique more than ones in which you just go through the motions. I hope you enjoy/ed the sexual assault hotline. (Wow, that came out awkward.)

From your comments it seems like you didn't think it was a good experience. Do whatever you want. I don't think anyone should feign interest, so be honest with your interviewers about your commitment and why you did it.

ok my true reason is "i want to practice my english skills and i want to tease people that call there", but on the interview i would say "i wanted to practice my conversation skills and i wanted to help people who were down, because i felt i could relate to them as i too have had unfortunate experiences throughout my life and know how it is good to have someone support you"

eh, if you're a woman you can say that you've been sexually assaulted and make the people feel sorry for you. but afraid as a man if i list such an activity they may think i've assaulted someone. cant they just give out points for creativity?

I don't think anything is wrong with it. My philosophy is that you want EC's that'll make your application stand out. And I doubt there are many application with that particular activity.

No problem. I'm taking up fencing and rowing this semester. And when I told my mom, she looked at me like she was nuts. So I know how you feel. 😀

You wanted to tease people that call there? I am sorry, but that is really messed up. I will admit that there are certain EC's I got involved with to help my resume, but the way you speak of your reasoning for doing this one (in particular this one) is very disturbing to me. I am sorry, and I have never said such a negative thing on SDN, but this attitude does not speak well for you becoming a physician.

i'm kidding, relax man. i want to learn. but there is some half-truth to it. i am obviously not "someone" who was sexually assaulted...

I am going to give you the benefit of the doubt and assume you were referring to teasing people who pranked the hotline. If not, that's pretty lame.

ANY EC that will set you apart from the crowd is worth doing in my view. Go for it..it can only help.

I think doing things to just throw on your resume is a bad idea. Especially if you are trying to do it to look "unique". There are a million people out there that throw things on there to just look different, so you won't actually look very different at all. If you don't have any real passion about something, its going to come out in your interview especially if you have to script out an answer before hand. So ask yourself- are you genuinely excited about this activity and helping people through it? If not, then do yourself and the callers of the hotline a favor and try something else.
