the schools are like night and day (aside from both being in d.c.). surely you must have certain preferences in a medical school that would draw you to one or the other.

I was turned off by Georgetown by their preachyness.

GW seems like the avg. med school to me.

Shouldn't it be easy to choose for you if you were there? The only thing they have in common is high tuition, D.C., and the name "George".

if you have nothing helpful to say, don't bother wasting my time or yours posting. also, if you were so annoyed as to find this again, why did you open it? why did you post a reply?

we're supposed to help each other out.

thanks everyone.

Sometimes a question gets asked over and over and some people get tired of answering it. I guess this is one of those questions. Talking to one student who went to the Georgetown SMP program a few years ago led me to believe that George Washington is the better of the two medical schools as of right now and that Georgetown has been slipping over the past decade.

Agreed 👍 That's what forums are for...asking questions. I HATE it when people tell you to search, why don't they do a freakin search?

oh come on, i merely thought heimerfink's post was funny. surely this is not the worst reply someone has made on an sdn thread...

anyway, to answer your question which was

i think that george washington is a more relaxed school - students seem to enjoy their time there, they enjoy their courses (especially the practice of medicine course), and they get along very well. in my opinion, the students i met there were the most mature yet cohesive group of all the students i've met at my six interviews this year. also, the school is in a really convenient yet pricey area of DC (aren't they all, though?) and it is located very close to the metro (whcih, in my opinion, is a huge plus since public trans in dc is not the greatest).

i think georgetown is much more cut-throat and the students, to me, don't seem to enjoy being at their school as much as gw students do. georgetown has an interesting curriculum and, as a student in their special masters program last year, i found the professors to be great (most of them, at least). their students have great success in the match and that's probably due to their really rigorous first two years. georgetown really touts the whole community service and cura personalis bits, but many of the students i've met really didn't seem to care about those facets of the program after their got in. the hospital at georgetown is nowhere near as advanced or busy as gw's, but they do have rotations at some great hospitals in dc, and georgetown's hospital does have some great strengths.

in closing, i just want to mention that to be accepted to georgetown, you must have, somewhere along the line, convinced them why you really want to go to there (whether it was in the essay, during the interview, or perhaps in a letter you wrote them). their admissions committe relies greatly on that. if you were sincere about what you told them, you should already have a bunch of reasons why you like georgetown. i'd encourage you to examine those aspects and think about whether or not they apply to george washington. like i said before, the schools are quite different, so that provides plenty of ground for comparison. anyway, i apologize for offending you previously. it was not my intention. i hope this was in some way helpful. as a former georgetown smp student and someone who knows the school well, i'll be happy to answer any more specific questions. good luck.

By telling u to do a search where you would find 10 threads exactly titled this. How is telling u where to find the info bad? How is saying thats its been done to death (it has) mean?

This is the dumbest statement ever. Why dont they do a search? Because we dont need the info. Why do they tell someone to do a search? Because it is the answer to their question as it provides them to a place they can find their answer.

JPwins,
this comparison HAS been done a million times. I think it boils down to personality types...when you interviewed at both schools, where did you think you fit in best with the students?? GW students (on the whole) are VERY different personality-wise than Gtown students..not better, not worse, just DIFFERENT ( 🙂 ...this is actually kinda ironic since i think Ms. Sullivan says this when comparing gtown to other med schools during her pitch on interview day). I dont think anyone on these forums can tell you anything diff than what you already know about these two programs, only you can decide where you will be most comfortable

Hey,

GW is a good school, but if I were you I would do a second visit to Georgetown. They have a fine program, which is ranked higher than GW and they definitely carry a lot of prestige in terms of their clinical reputation. I would say that Georgetown is an excellent medical school, I have friends studying there I am know about it personally.

I would at least seriously consider going to Georgetown, don't have any regrets down the road, you know? Good luck to you!!

True....

G-town
expensive
traditional curriculum
class is on a curve so only 10 % get honors,30% get pass, etc
facilities arent the greatest
good name
3rd and 4th yr are supposedly ridiculously time consuming and they
brag how they make it like residency (70 hours per week or something)
competitive class
cura personalis or some saying about curing the whole person

Dont know much about GW except that its one of the most expensive schools in the country.
