Hey!

I just got accepted to GW. Although I'd love to attend their school, the tuition is insanely high. Does anyone know about their financial aid and whether or not they offer reasonable aid to make their tuition a bit more affordable?

Thanks for your help!

Good luck,
WT

One more thing - where can I find info of the average GW graduate's debt??

Tuition is that amount but you have to figure living expenses as well.

So the amount in the MSAR is simply the average debt for the tuition??

Yeah, I think so. And bear in mind that the living expenses in DC is insanely high.

No, average indebtedness is how much the average grad leaves the school in debt. Including EVERYTHING. Tuition and living costs - the whole budget.

They supposedly give a lot of need-based aid (they're papers said 15k is average). Check the stuff they gave you at the interview - it should have all the info you're lookign for.

Congrats wildtumor!!!! 🙂 Yes, I agree with what everyone said but at the end of the day, you have to do what will make you happy. DC may be expensive to live in but what major city isn't? Life is short so do as your heart (not your pocket) desires. Ultimately, people want to be happy, and only you know whether it is GWU or another school that will be the means to that end.

Thank you all for your input.

It is much appreciated.

Hey wildtumor,
Congrats and good luck with decision making🙂

the figure is the average indebtedness overall - everything, tuition, housing, etc. my debt is going to be higher for sure (ugh). but, it's a choice i made. i turned down my state school (suny upstate) for gw because, despite the huge tuition difference, i knew i'd be much happier at gw. i liked the students i met at gw better, i liked gw's program a lot better, and i didn't want to stagnate in syracuse, ny for 4 years of my life (don't get me wrong, i know some people love syracuse. i know the city pretty well and it's not my kind of place). even so, i know physicians who took out as much money as i will be taking out, and they survived just fine. sure, i'll have more money to pay off, but it'll happen.

anyway, that was a tangent. to answer your question, i know a few people who got merit scholarships in my class, and i know people who are happy with the need-based aid they've received. since you've been accepted, you should definitely call up chuck carpenter (dean of fin aid). he's great and will surely explain things for you. gw med has a separate fin aid dept than the university, so you'll get all your specific question answered.

best of luck (i'm really happy with my decision and only very rarely freak out about tuition. haha)

wow, wildtumor. i just saw in another thread that you also got into suny upstate. what a coincidence. anyway, don't take my post as a suny upstate vs. gw - they're both great schools. just my own personal preference. congrats!

Yeah - that's really funny. Time will tell. I will call financial aid and see what kind of package I am likely to get.

Thanks for your help.

Hey if they do tell you over the phone (at least give you a general idea) can you let the rest of us know. I don't want to inundate them with calls, but I'd like some idea.

And to those who are already there - when do they send you your finaid package?
