I've been assisting a dentist now for 2 years and I am starting to feel pain right under my thumb occasionally when working with my hands. It's an annoying feeling. The pain is mild now but I'm afraid it will get worse.
I am starting dental school in the Fall. I was wondering if other people have dealt with hand pain while in dental school. Does anyone have any advice on what I should do?

-Thanks

how old are you?

I am a decade older and a half older than most other predents. In the last couple of years, I have begun to notice some strange tension sensations in my index fingers bordering on pain. I've consulted a doctor and they couldn't find anything. The more I have thought about it, the more confident I am that most of it is simply me being so much more aware of my hands than I was before I wanted to become a dentist. I mean, they are going to be so important. So, I am guessing its mostly just me being a worry wart.

Though, it seems the strange sensation of pulling bordering on pain (feels somewhat like carpal tunnel which I had once) seems to only occur in cold weather. As soon as I put gloves on and/or heat my hands, the uncomfortable/ disconcerting sensation goes away.

More research on the internet into the particulars of the sensation you are experiencing might be in order as well as a visit to a specialist MD.:luck:

Thanks for your input. I do agree that I am more AWARE.. I realize that the discomfort is there. I wouldn't call it painful just yet. I'm in my mid-20s.

Been having left wrist problems for the past few weeks. I'm going to see a orthopedics specialist soon but I was just wondering how much do you actually use it?

Are you in dental school now? How is your hand doing?
If someone has a similar problem and is about to decide on dental school, will they be ok?

I have a similar problem and am in need of assistance! I have repeatedly sprained my thumb in the past 5 years (+6 times) playing sports such as basketball and football. I have always decided on letting it heal without going to a doctor but it has gotten very unstable now and I'm going to see a specialist. If i need some kind of surgery and wont be able to use my right hand for a little when school starts, will the school suspend me in any way? Also, I've been thinking about it for a while but can I start dental school lefty even though I've used my right hand for everything my whole life?
