i have a question. for those of you who have interviewed and gotten the financial aid talk: how much do harvard medical school graduates owe after graduating from medical school? i am unsure whether to interview there and the overall cost of medical school would be my determining factor. or do they tell you at all? should i call and ask? any thoughts are appreciated.

usnews.com shows the average indebtedness for graduating students at all schools. Harvard's is $83,925, which is well below the national average for private schools (I think).

If you can get into Harvard, you can undoubtably get into schools much cheaper than Harvard. :D

The unit loan is $20,000, I believe. So, if your demonstrated need is above $20,000, they'll grant you everything you need above $20,000. That'd work out to about $80,000 over the four years, as someone else has already pointed out.

as you can see raj, people sort of don't like to hear about harvard interviewers (or other great schools) asking easy to answer (stupid?) questions. it makes us red in the face.

Yeah, rajneel1, I'm trying to compile an average cost list myself for Harvard, Hopkins, UPenn, WashU, Columbia, UCSF, Stanford, and Yale. I'm just not sure whether I want to go on all these interviews, so let me know as soon as you find out. Thanks.

Try checking out the schools' websites. Often they have a number called "Total Student Budget" in Financial Aid Info which inclused all the costs most students incur at a particular med school (includes housing and food, ect.) I'm not sure if this helps you but anyways....

They did not have a financial aid talk the day I was there. The info packet says:

*Unit Loan is $20,000 ($8,500 Subsidized Staffords, $11,500 Harvard Loan)

*Remaining need met with scholarship (which they specify is need based, not merit based)

*Standard budgets:
1st Year: $46,500
2nd Year: $51,000
3rd Year: $49,250
4th Year: $46,850
5th Year (optional): $19,450
(Standard budget assumes you will be living in the dorm.)

Good luck!

hey katiep,
i know stanford indebtedness average is $68,000 and hopkins is $70,000. very good huh?

rajneel1, go to the interview!!! I wouldn't pass that up for anything. Plus, no matter how expensive, you'll probably make your money back in the long run in terms of more prestegious residencies and beyond.

Caveman-I'm sick of reading through threads and finding your whiny comments on each one. Crawl back into your cave.

From a financial standpoint, I know that Stanford has this work-study program that keeps costs and avg indebtness very low; Hopkins is fairly expensive but they help you out somewhat with grants, Wash U doesn't help you out very much with grants. I know that Yale and Wash U, (and I think Columbia) calculate an estimated parental contribution (regardless of how willing your parents are able/willing to pay it) based on your parents salary into your financial aid package. This can make these schools pretty expensive if you know that your parents won't be contributing anything because you have to borrow what they wanted your parents to pay. Wash U calculates a very generous parental contribution too into your budget. I would give specific numbers but the numbers vary based your situation. [This was true when I applied, 2 yrs ago]

coffee cat,

please. don't start with those funny cave jokes. if you don't like my "whiny" comments then say something. i think sometimes my comments are whiny too. but you're gonna have to live with them aren't you? you don't like what I say...challenge my comments. but how dare you just jump at me with insults. i praise more than i criticize, but when i criticize i always explain why...and i'm always more than reasonable.

but you, you kool cat, you coffee cat, you little Freak, if you want to just name-call then keep doing it. ten bucks says you're the biggest loser on your campus....

Caveman,
That crap isn't needed here. We all have stupid questions once in a while. If he/she has an interview at Harvard, more power to him/her. Just because an interview was granted doesn't mean there aren't still questions to be answered.

IMHO: $10 says you're the bigger loser considering you've had time to make 220+ posts in a matter of a month...

I like that... :D

Seriously, though. Caveman, a more positive attitude would help.
