Hey, everybody,

I need some help in deciding which program is best at Harvard University (New Pathway(NP) or Health Sciences and Technology(HST))? I read through their program descriptions, but little confuse about why they accept 160 students for NP program and only 30 students for HST program................................................Is that mean HST is higher level program than NP?...........................thanks.........

HST is more geared toward a quantitative appraoch to medicine, and therefore attracts lots of biomedical engineering majors and the like. Part of the smaller acceptance number is due to the more rigorous prereqs (i.e. math through differential equations), but I also imagine that it is partly due to a limitation on the number of students that the program can handle as well (since it is after all in conjunction with MIT). I would not necessarily say it is a higher program...just a different one.

Well, apply to both. When you're accepted to them, please re-up this thread. 🙂

They are both prestigious programs. If you are applying to them solely for prestige, then you are better off not applying to them at all.

The HST program is geared towards people more interested in doing academic medicine but who do not desire doing a PhD with their MD degree. The New Pathway model, on the other hand, is a PBL based curricula which is more geared towards clinical medicine. That is what I gather from the two. I would talk to some people from the Class of 2009 or what not, that are in the Allopathic forum and see what they say.

Thanks so much everybody for all the help and info.................................If u find out more info please post it.........................now, it makes lot clear(differences between two programs) for me....................thanks a lot..........

I am a New Pathway M1. The HST program is much different and the above posts are correct - HST is a more traditional, quantitative curriculum. NP is problem based. So far, I think problem based learning is great. We don't have exams every week and our class is able to focus on learning, not competition or mere survival. It makes for a nice atmosphere.

However, I also think HST is a fantastic program. It seems they crack the whip a little harder over there. Sometimes, I feel like I need that. I was talking to a 3rd year HST student and she feels NP students are a little more prepared for the wards (that's just one opinion!). However, HST students are probably more prepared for a career as a physician/scientist.

But, it's not like NP cranks out touchy-feely physicians without a hard science background and HST produces only scientists who can't speak to patients. I think if you have a specific goal, you can reach it in either program. It all depends on how you want to learn.
