Excluding Tuition and Fees how much do you anticipate you'll need to spend each year on living expenses?

20000? 40000? Anyone with a family?

Around $100K... that's if I go to the cheapest school...

that really depends on where you go. I just got back from an interview at boston and they say around 19 a year i think. But Boston as you know is expensive.

Total costs of living will vary greatly depending upon the location of the school you are attending and where you live in that city. You may get a better answer if you tell us where you plan to attend/stay.🙂

New york, Boston, Philadelphia.....at least $40,000 to live off of. (my friend rents a closet in NY for $2,500 per month. OUCH!!!)
Smaller towns and cities.... around $20,000 or less

What the hell? There are 48 months in 4 years--so, just your rent would be around $48000 with inflation in mind... What if you're married and have kids?
What about car, property, mortgage, medical, dental insurances? Food? Fun?
Gas? Beer? Internet fees? Fun? Beer?

I guess, if you want to "exist" for 4 years in a dorm with a few other studs, walk to school, and eat leftover pizza from your friends--$40K might be barely enough for 4 years of school...

I am talking about between 20k and 40k Each year. Take into account rent, car insurance, car payments, credit cards, food, miscellaneous, gas, health insurance, heating/ac, tv, water bill, phone bill, cell bill, and anything else. If you think you can survive on 20k to 40k for 4 years, please tell me how.

I would say you could get away with 20k a year in Buffalo because the cost of living is dirt cheap.

I would say $1000/month rent (with roomate), $400/month food, $400 tops for utilities and other expenses.
About $1,800/month in Boston (that's where I live) If you multiply by 12 months, that's a little over $26k per year. I think this is an over estimation. You could lower your rent if you live with more than one roomate or move to a cheaper part of the city. Allston/Brighton area is filled with college kids and should be easy to find something semi-reasonable. The suburbs are another option if you have a family to care for. Quincy, Arlington, Burlington or Cambridge are just outside the city and are still reasonably priced. Good luck! Go Red Sox!

HAHA... gotta have that EtOH...

Seriously though, Im also going to Buffalo and the estimate they provide for living is rediculous. As for insurance, you can get it through the school and they count it in the budget for you. If you have a family, that would be extra. As for car payments, I think they budget you 1200 a year.... that would perhaps cover liability insurance and gas. Forget about repairs on an older car or payments if you have a newer one. The school is one of the cheapest ones around and it would be nice if they allowed you to take out a little more money. I think there are some banks that allow you to borrow money for education without school certification but their interests are rediculous and you would have to start paying the loan back right away, meaning you would have to borrow even more so you could make the payments. Unless Im mistaken, with the interest rate they offer providing you have good credit, you pay back about double the principal in about 10 years.

The way I estimated living in Buffalo:

Rent without a roommate: 500-600 for a studio
With roommate: 400
Very cheap rent in Buffalo
Utilities: Cable, gas, electric, water: 100-150
Food: 400-500/month

So your basic necessities should cost from 900-1250 monthly
As for clothes and other "wants"... all up to your budget.
As for car payments and insurance, they wish you luck at the school.

The problem with Buffalo, they only give you aid for 9.5 months according to them. I guess they know of many landlords that give out 9.5 month leases.

The school is still by far one of the cheapest out there and well just have to deal with it...

Hrmm I think your gas (heat) bill is going to be alot more than that, but I could be wrong.

Living off of less than 20Ka year is very easy and doable. Living within your means is very important. you need to understand it as a Dental student and as a Dentist. (only 3% of dentists retire comfortably at age 65, go read this thread on Dental Town and you will learn a lot about budgeting from this thread). I started my undergrad with $0 and $0 coming from my parents and at the end of four years I have a good amount of cash.

My Monthly expenses:
Rent: $290(sharing a 3 bedroom apt)
Internet and other housing utilities(gas, heater, electricity etc): $100
Cell Phone Bill: $45
Car Insurance: $50 per month(I pay about $520 per year with clean record and no tickets of what so ever).
Gas for car:$50 per month is more than enogh if you going to school(use on weekend only).
Food and outside eating: $400 (actually of you don't eat out much you can do it on 300 with very good living).
Personal and Misc: $100
and yeah don't waste too much money on clothing and some useless $hit I see people buying all the time.
This is total at: $1035.00 per month. I have been doing it on about $1000 per month on average. I have lived pretty good life over my last four years and I hope to continue the same through dental school. One smart thing to do is buy a lightly used vehicle and pay the cash. car payments are not necessary in school. Actually you can do without car in a city like Ann Arbor even though I have never lived without car in AA. This is obviously for single. If you are married than you have spouse working so I don't see it as being harder. Even if you live modestly and add in the student health insurance you are talkin no more than $1500.00 per month and that is less than $20k per year.

"(only 3% of dentists retire comfortably at age 65, go read this thread on Dental Town and you will learn a lot about budgeting from this thread). " Yea the other 97% percent retire comfortably at the age of 50

It sounds easy from looking at the future income potential but you are not accounting 1M plus debt you will have when you done with school, practice and house. Most dentists buy BMW's and other expensive stuff when they get out of school and they find themselves in the hole for a huge debt. Yes if you are discipline enough you can retire at 50 but many people in health profession aren't. I read in DT once that about 300 dentists file for bankruptcy every year. This shows how bad these dentists are at managing their money. Dentists earn good money and they should be able to reture by 50 but they don't and it is a fact.

Sorry, I assumed insurance was included in the tuition we're gonna get billed for. And as for EtOH, ..... I don't really drink so I didn't include it in my estimated cost of living. I'm sure there are many other people that can guide you in your alcohol consumption. *gulp*
