Some residents have reccommended to take the USMLE step 3 during year 4 of medical school (it will be harder to study during residency and ObGyn and peds will be farther away...I'm going into surgery). Has anyone tried to do this? The USMLE website is pretty determined to say that you have to have an MD before you can submit the application for the USMLE step 3.

I'm pretty certain that the earliest time you can take Step 3 is in the period after graduation but before beginning your residency. If you can manage to do without the vacation I assure you it would be worth it.
