Hey all:

Does anyone know why radioiodine uptake is increased in hashimoto. As I understand it, Hashimoto is an autoimmune destruction of thyroid gland, so there should be less uptake as the gland is getting destroyed.

Thanks

Jo

From what I've seen it is fairly variable... And also from what I've seen it's not a recommended diagnostic test because it is so variable, rather it is used for nodules. That being said theoretically it might be high because the antibodies target thyroid peroxidase (changed iodide to iodine) and thyroglobulin that receives them which I believe is downstream from the absorption of the iodide. And you are low in T4 and TSH is high so you are driving the influx I suppose.
