Have any of you actually met someone else from SDN in med school? (other members, or even adcoms)

Random but seems interesting to find out.

I'm sure this happens. I recognized someone already at an interview.

Don't SDNers care about anonymity?

In some cases it is pretty obvious which SDN poster someone is when you meet them in person. People are generally a lot less anonymous than they think they are. There are two people in particular who I have recognized at interviews after less than 5 minutes of chatting, and they might have recognized me as well. We didn't really say anything at the time (see porn analogy above), but they were neat small world moments from the interview trail that might come up later.

I kinda assume most people know who I am but I've only had 1 person come out and say it to me. And this was after a few drinks.

No but I might try at my upcoming interviews when I have a few days to kill...

Lol, med school conversations about SDN are kind of like conversations about porn.

Everyone looks at it, but no one wants to admit it.

True because almost any premed keywords searched on google eventually links to SDN so it's almost impossible to never have at least passed through.

Some of us 2017ers are pretty tight and interact a lot outside of SDN (read: Facebook). Hell, I've met up with one of them twice for cheese steaks when they were in town.

Yup. Didn't mention it, though. No point.

Medicine is a small world. It's basically a permanent game of less than six degrees of separation.

Yeah I became good buddies with someone on SDN and we met in person at an interview. Pretty neat.

In terms of AdCom, i would never dare to try and break anonymity with them just because the hold a very important position in admissions.

My roomie and I just had a conversation about the best category of porn to watch; your point is invalid

Then you might want to change your sig, if you really are quoting your classmates, esp. since you are a URM since there aren't that many in the class.

Except the people in your class who peruse SDN, will see and recognize someone saying those quotes, recognize it's someone in their class and realize who it is since you've said you're a URM.

I'll probably wear one of these that says, "The Buff OP" on my interviews.

Sure, I knew who several of my classmates were on SDN. Also a couple of my residency classmates and my current boss.

One of my good friends in my class I met on SDN. It was actually nice to know someone before arriving.

I'm curious how this works. Did you out yourself like, "Hi, I'm Narmerguy on SDN, and I like turtles!" or something?

Has being known made you hesitate/think/stop you from writing/posting something you would have otherwise done? I see value in anonymity, because people will spout their thoughts, their racisms, and beliefs without worry for being judged. It's a good way to talk without social inhibitions.

Anyone who has read my posts here and then talks to me in person for a minute is going to know it is me. I am not different in person. I have avoided giving enough specifics that someone could pick my application out of a pile and know who I am based purely on stats.

If I get into a school, I will get a lot less paranoid about anonymity. I don't mind if classmates know who I am on here, once I'm in. I just don't want anything to complicate the admissions process, if I can avoid it.

I talked with a guy at an interview and later found out who he was on SDN, because his background was so unique.

I hope no one finds me out. I'm an dingus on here.

I'm more of a salamander kind of guy.

It actually began on SDN with someone saying "hey we're going to the same school next year". I don't think it affects what I write here because I generally try to be thoughtful and true to myself whether online or in person. I would happily stand by anything I said in either context. Perhaps it's easier because I don't have any demonstrably flagrant views. At any rate, I think encouraging a good community culture is important, and I wish more people would look at this as a place to create a helpful, supportive community rather than a place to act out and get their rocks off by antagonizing others.

I had a different username back when I was applying and I was identified quite easily at multiple interviews. That was pretty unsettling.

I know there are several classmates that post here relatively frequently.

I've spent some time hanging out with other SDN users that go to school in my city; I didn't know them before, and the only context in which we were aware of one another was via SDN. They were great folks and I'm glad I had the chance to meet them.

As @southernIM said, most people utilize SDN in some form or another, but few people disclose that they do and fewer still actually stick around and contribute meaningful and helpful information. Most people are leeches in that they use it for their own gain but don't take the time to help others out.

I actually think the utility of SDN increases as you get through training. The allopathic forum and especially specialty-specific forums are much higher quality and filled with great information.

I purposely met up with several fellow SDNers when I was interviewing, and I go to school with a few as well both in my class and the 1st year class.
Also, I interact with quite a few 2017ers on Facebook just as Dr strange said.
I don't mind being known because I have nothing to hide from my online persona to who I am in real life. The networking opportunity of SDN is pretty handy I think

Now I kind of wish I posted more on SDN..

Crazy that a lot of you guys actually know eachother. I thought SDN was too big for posters to seem like anything other than random anonymous users, except for a few e-celebrities around here. I wonder what number of users are actively posting on these boards daily/weekly.

I think I know how to facilitate more people meeting up through SDN: With all the angsty boyfriend/girlfriend threads scattered acros allo and pre-allo, I'm this close to starting SDHarmony..."(future) doctors need love too".

A lot of SDNers had previously msged me about advice/tips/random tidbits (mutual friends etc), so we ended up meeting during interviews, 2nd look, or once school started. I've been "outed" by probably close to half a dozen of my classmates at this point, but that's mainly because it's really obvious who I am based on my SDN handle alone .

Also, has anyone met anyone in real life on SDN?
Lots, including several of the other mods. When I was interviewing for both med school and residency, I saved a ton of money by staying with fellow SDNers. Hosted some other people when they came to interview at my school, too. Something to think about for those of you who will be hemorrhaging cash on the interview trail this fall and winter.

I'm surprised no one at my school has told me they know who I am on SDN yet. I don't do a very good job at remaining anonymous, despite my extremely anonymous handle.

So weird, how do people figure it out? I understand how someone I know in real life would know who I am on SDN, but not with strangers.

Well for the most part you dont figure it out UNTIL youve met them in real life (e.g. at an interview, goes to your school, etc.). Otherwise what does "knowing who they are" even mean? like you have to have a person to associate with their handle. Although like Strange said, some SDNers interact with others through facebook, myself included, so in that case I guess you can associate an SDN handle with a face without having met him/her in person!

I know two people in my class, originally because we knew we were interviewing together. I don't think they post too often, though.

But who knows who else knows me!

I met 1 person from Sdn. But then over the years I've found out who a few ppl are and turns out I already knew them.

I'd love to meet people on SDN. By some very obvious handles I can tell when someone on here goes to my school.. But from there to actually messaging them to know who they are... I'm still not there yet. Haha.
