Hi, I'm going to Tripler in a short while for a rotation and had a couple of questions about Honolulu, since I've never been (so pardon my ignorance).
How bad is the traffic and parking there? The reason I ask is b/c I have an opportunity to possibly stay off-post for free (long story) and it would be about 10 miles away from Tripler (in Waikiki). Looks like it would be a drive mostly along H-1 to get there.
Also, how bad is the crime in the city? My guess would be it's not that bad but just figured I'd ask.
any help you guys could give would be much appreciated. Thanks.

I was appalled by the crime level in Hawaii. I guess it goes with the territory with all the rich tourists in town throwing their money around. You can't go to any park or public place without seeing a sign that says "Do not leave valuables in car." This is especially true if you have a rental car, they can spot them a mile away. My trunk was broken into and I had a bag stolen while I was there on ADT (this was at a park, not at TAMC). Every house that is worth protecting has a security system. Also, the traffic is horrendous. There is no route that actually moves during rush hour.

Keep in mind this is all relative, I suppose if you're from NYC it may not be all that bad for you.

Well, actually I am from NYC but nevertheless I'm not immune to it all. I'd like to be able to commute from where i might be staying (it's in Waikiki) to TAMC in under a half hour if possible. As for the car business, we're pretty used to that here but I'd like to be able to go out without worrying about getting mugged or killed.

I lived in Honolulu for about a year and never had a problem. It's like any major city where one always needs to be vigilant. I always took the proper precautions like I would anywhere else. As for traffic, I didn't own a car there and got around using my bike, taking TheBus or hitching rides from friends. While the traffic can be painfully slow at times, it's not anything you can't handle if your used to city driving.

If I had the chance to go back I would. Good luck at Tripler.

Lived in Hawaii my whole life, the property crime is bad, but it is a very safe place.(not to many muggings /rape/murder ect.) . As for the drive, i commuted for 4 years to waikiki for school. its a 15 minute drive to tripler that can take over an hour or more at rush time.
If you have any specific questions id be happy to answer them

Honolulu's traffic situation is very comparable to LA. If you're working on Tripler, you'll be planning your life around missing rush hour. It's not pretty.

If you're living in Waikiki, you'll need a parking space, or be prepared to do a lot of hunting for parking spaces when you come home each night. Some parts of Waikiki are worse than others, but as a whole, it's not fun to look for parking, especially on weekends.

Crime against persons is low in Waikiki, crimes against property is high. Most places on island, I wouldn't worry about leaving my car, but in the high-tourist areas (especially Waikiki) the odds of getting your car broken into are pretty high. The odds of getting mugged or attacked anywhere in Honolulu is very low unless you're looking for trouble.

It's a great place to live.
