I know I definitely do! These are the main schools that I would love to go to. I just wanted to know if there was anybody else out there who just really really wants to go to one of the HBCU's for medical school. We can use this thread to discuss the schools and keep up with each other during the app cycle! Or maybe just talk! God bless.

DO HBCU's take non-black students? I imagine that may non-black students would find great value in attending an HBCU and see it as a powerful learning experience.

Yes they do. It's a common mis-perception that HBCU's don't take non-black students. There student bodies are very diverse, as long as you have the desire to serve the underserved, then you are golden. I love them, especially Howard! It is a very powerful learning experience, at least from what I have been told and have been learning.

I have many friends doing their undergrad education at Morehouse and they seem to love it. I'm glad to know that others are able to take advantage of such a unique experience.

I'm black but have never really had a preference towards HBCUs. I didn't choose to attend one for undergrad but i'm considering a couple for Med school. Moreso due to location rather than it being an HBCU.

hmm well i never intended to go to an hbcu in the first place. i only went because they offered me a full ride and i knew i would have plenty of loans to deal with for med school. i came from a very multiracial albeit predominantly white high school which i didn't realize how much i missed until second semester when i visited a neighboring college and i was like " wow look at all these white people..." lol it wasn't that i felt awkward or anything i just realized that i'm at school 99% of the time and i'm a little more sheltered from other races than i would like to be.

    Change of pace/scenery/environment maybe?

I can totally understand where the poster is coming from. I attended UT Austin for undergrad, which only has about 1500 black students on a campus of 50,000 kids. So, the idea of attending an HBCU for a change of pace was VERY intriguing. You have to mix it up on occasion - otherwise things get monotonous and boring.

Im sure they will be able to tell from your enthusiasm ;)....do they not have EDP, you might could go that route, If not I would see if I could set up a meeting with their ADCOM before you apply or atelast a phone interview....if its at all possible.

I'm applying to Morehouse and Howard too... they're really great medical schools. I really hope I get into Morehouse, from what I heard they have a 100% pass rate of the USMLE step-1 which is saying a lot.

Moorehouse just recently had their first White Valedictorian. He was on "The View" today.

This is an old thread but still relevant =D I go to the school that's in my profile pic for undergrad and it is absolutely amazing for premed and the culture/student life here is second to none- really unique. The medical school is literally across the street and that's where I see myself in a couple of years!

How hard is it for a non-black to attend an HBCU? What about someone with small amount of black heritage?

I have some Afro-Caribbean ancestors so I applied to HBCU's but so far no love :(

I believe that its not hard for someone who is not black to get in, but I believe they would want the person to be involved with the black or multicultural community. Because to be honest they know that there are many people who apply just because their stats are lower than some other schools
