healthcare deducted from res salary?

I have a question regarding healthcare. When programs give you the salary that pgy1's and 2;etc make is healthcare already deducted from that salary.
i only ask cz a program i interviewed at recently said their healthcare plan was completely free as opposed to other programs. thanx!
 
no it is not... generally speaking... you will pay for your healthcare, eye care, dentist care, with pre-tax dollars that will be deducted from your paycheck just like taxes are... my vision/dental/medical care comes to $80 / month that is deducted pre-tax...

usually in working for these hospitals your healthcare is highly subsidized by them... so in reality I am getting probably a value of $400-500 for $80 so it is an extremely good deal...
 
Yes, some residencies really will give you free healthcare. My salary is equal to or higher than other programs in the area, but I do not pay for healthcare. This includes any prescriptions, ER visits, lab tests, etc., as long as they are obtained within the hospital system. This also includes all care for my spouse and children. I thought it was too good to be true until I started working here. One of the residents had surgery and others have had children, all free.

On the other hand, dental and opthamology services aren't available in the hospital, so we do pay small fees for these services. I can live with that 🙂

This isn't the reason I chose my program, but it sure is a nice perk!
 
Depends on the program. During residency, my medical care was already paid for (BC/BS), only the portion for healthcare was extra. During internship and fellowship I had 10% of the premium taken out of my paycheck and they provided regular PPO type health insurance.

(some hospitals do the 'as long as you stay at our hospital everything is free' thing. but that can really become a problem if you need care outside of the system, especially for dependents. 'real' health insurance ideally a PPO with a multistate provider network is the better option).

There are some tax implications to this. It is somehow beneficial if they charge 10% to the employee, don't ask me why.
