I've received my financial aid estimates, and they are pretty uniformly awful... the best 'award' I have received still contains ~$26,000 per year of UNsubsidized loans.

Does anyone out there have any suggestions? Has anyone had any success with 'appealing' financial aid decisions? If so, how do approach that situation tactfully?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Sorry, I can't help because I haven't received any. But, I was wondering if the $26,000 of unsubsidized loan you got is just to complete what you'll need for tuition and fees, or the maximum that you are allowed to borrow.
If the 26,000 will cover everything, it's probably not too bad because a lot of people I know still have to take out private loans after all un/subsidized loans.
I wonder what's mine's gonna look like 😱

well unless I'm mistaken, usually, people are eligible to upto $35K in unsubsidized.... I know it's definitely more than 26K... to answer the OP's question though... I dont know how to proceed about 'appealing'

Bump

Anyone out there have any suggestions???

Which school? I noticed that you are from Virginia. I just got my fin. aid estimate back from UVa and I was stoked. It's expensive but atleast I got some scholarships and a school funded loan which accrues no interest in school. It looks like I will have to tak out about 15K in unsubsidized loans but that is not a lot compared to other schools. I love UVa. PM me if you have questions.
