Hey guys,

Unfortunately my very first interview is going to be at NYU, which happens to be my top choice...I was hoping to schedule NYMC in before NYU, but they are booked until January.

Should I be worried? I was hoping to have some interview experience before getting to NYU, so now I'm a bit scared on messing up or making some mistakes that first-time interviewees do. I've browsed the NYU Interview feedback, and it looks pretty laidback, but I still wish it wasn't my first.

Any advice?

Thanks

Don't sweat it. My first interview actually felt like it went better than my second. Go in, realize they're not out to get you, and have a good conversation with another intelligent person. Take your time, be thoughtful, and you'll do great!

There is so much time before January, that I bet you'll have other interviews before NYU. Most do not have that long of a lag between invite and actual date. Don't worry, there will be more before!

Actually, I think he's saying that NYMC is in January, which is why NYU will be earlier.

Do a mock interview or two. If you can do more than one, i'd start w/ someone who will build your confidence (your mom, a well-known advisor), and then do one with someone who may be more of a challenge (your PI, a sour old doctor, etc.). You can provide them w/ the SDN Interview Feedback for the school, so they'll be asking you similar questions to what you'll actually get.

Good luck!

Hi calvinandhobbes,

I'm in the same boat as you. My first interview is coming up this weekend and it's my top choice by a mile. Just stay relaxed and look confident in yourself. Yes it's a big occasion but you'll do yourself no favors if you appear nervous. I think you'll do just fine if you prepare well enough.

Much luck to you.

Haha, sour old doctor...that's great and I'm not sure why. I just imagine this wrinkly, chunky, pasty bald old man with liver spots everywhere and a constant frown on his face. The range of his "smile" goes from abouut 😡 to 😕. Ok I'm done with that!

To the OP: Same boat here as well. First interview next Thursday at my toppity top choice, and peeing my pants to the point of full saturation. Just review your application, practice interview questions, and we'll all be fine.

Hey guys, thanks so much for the help.

another question, what are my chances of albert einstein NOT being booked for the first two weekends of november?

my nyu interview is scheduled for nov. 14, and i'd really like to get another new york school out of the way (assuming that i get an einstein interview invite in the next couple weeks). air fare is ridiculous.

seeing that nymc is booked til january, i can't help but assume that einstein and every other school will be booked til around that time too.

thanks again for the help

If it helps at all, I seem to recall that NYU was one of the lowest-stress interviews I've had. Short, easy, to the point.

hey, same here! my first will be at NYU (11/11...anyone else? i realize this is a national holiday, so just wanna make sure i'm not day dreaming) and then NYMC (11/14), AECOM (11/15)
last week i got an invite from AECOM after i found out about NYMC and NYU. i emailed back to request 11/15, stating that i'm from CA and will be in NYC for other schools. about 3 days later, got a confirmation. so yah, give it a try! u will save $$$$$
good luck!

I interviewed at NYU last year, and it was very pleasant and low-stress. My student host was a absolutely wonderful, my interview was low-stress, and man, NYU is an awesome place. Talk about a school that cares for its students! I'd be there if it weren't in NYC. I think it was at about 4 AM that I realized that the noise I thought was pouring rain or a ventilation duct outside the window was actually the unending heavy traffic on the streets below. I just couldn't deal with big-city life.

But yeah, don't stress about it. I had a good time at NYU, and I'm sure you will too. Good luck!
