Hey All,

Just thought I would pick ur brain for a sec. I've been assigned to write up a disease for my human metabolism and disease class. I was just wondering if any of you had any particular diseases, that any of you found particularly interesting in ur medschool classes thus far. Thanks for any help.

Maple Syrup Urine Disease. Its a Genetic Metabolic disease. Its got an interesting name above all else.

There's lots of interesting metabolic diseases out there...read up on a few and decide what is most interesting to you and best for your assignment.

how about malignant hyperthermia....it's genetic, life-threatening, and essentially only affects individuals undergoing anesthesia, so it's asymptomatic until the person goes in for surgery!

How bout necrotizing fasciitis? It's not so much metabolic, but it's an interesting disease...

Allgrove syndrome; just saw a case of it. Rare and complicated, nicely clinically and scientifically characterized, but still with plenty unknowns. What more could you want in a writeup? 😎

Lesch-Nyhans. Rare, fascinating, and gross. It's my personal favorite.

Our instructor showed us a picture of a guy who chewed his own lips off because of the uric acid crystals. 😱 I didn't want to sleep for a week.

Familial Hypercholesterolemia is interesting because it is something that is relatively prevalent and pertains to many important things in terms of diet. I can't stand when they make you learn a bunch of details about a disease with a prevalence of like 1 in 30 million.

Thanks everyone, I'll keep on it...........I always suspected that there were some really interesting ones out there, just didn't know where to start looking. Some of these sound really wild. Thanks again.

Kikuchi syndrome/disease. Just because it sounds funny 😛

I totally agree. Atherosclerosis is another good one with a prevalence of around 1/58.

I agree with the posters who mentioned Lesch-Nyhan. That disease is seriously scary!

how about Tangier's disease........orange tonsils make a nice accessory to any outfit

How about phenylketonuria.

Prader-Willi Syndrome has to be the most interesting disease I've learned about thus far.

Children who suffer from this disease have an insatiable hunger-so much that their parents have to lock the refrigeratror.

They have also been known to eat family pets if they do not have access to food.
