Hello Everyone,

I am interested in pursuing a grad degree in Occupational Therapy. I have a BS in Health Administration, and I was accepted to NYU this past Fall semester. But, unfortunately I couldn't attend due to financial circumstances. Since NYU's OT program had a special admissions program called "CAP" (Corequisite Acceptance Program) that granted admissions to students that didn't have the OT pre-requisites, it was the perfect solution for me.

However, I am now faced with having to find a way to complete the pre-reqs so that I can apply to other OT programs. But, I'm not sure if I should pursue a post-bacc program or just take the courses on my own? I have had difficulty trying to register for pre-req courses such as Anatomy and Physiology I, II since they are popular and fill up quickly.

Does anyone know if the Hunter College, or other Post Baccalaureate programs in NY customize their programs for prospective OT students? I would really appreciate any advice on how I should proceed. 🙂

Thanks,
Madusa 🙂

I wish I could be of more help; I gradutated in '98 and thus began OT school in '94...prereqs are a mere memory.

I guess I'd say that you most direct course of action would be to contact the schools directly. I went to Utica College, in upstate NY, for my OT degree. I am very close with some of the faculty there; I can give you a name or two if that is any interest to you.

Good luck.

Hi bigdan,

Thanks so much for replying to my post. I have contacted some schools directly but they haven't been much help to me. My dilemma is that I'm having trouble registering for courses, particularly Anatomy and Physiology, because it's a popular course and the sections are filled quickly. So, as a non-degree student, I don't have priority in registering. 🙁

I don't know what to do?? Should I pursue a second degree? Or, pursue an AA/AS degree to become an OTA? 😕

These are the main pre-reqs that I need to complete:

Anatomy and Physiology I,II
Developmental Psychology

Some OT grad programs also require:

General Chemistry
General Biology

Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. 🙂

Thanks,
Madusa

Try BMCC.

What I did was look up all of the surrounding community colleges and applied for an enrollment window at each one that had possible courses I could take. Anatomy was full when I tried to add, but I kept calling the automated system over and over again before the course began and eventually got a seat in the class. For physiology, I showed up the first day of class and was added by lottery. As for developmental psychology, I took an online course (it wasn't full). I hope that helps!

Hi delight,

Thank you very much for responding to my post. I will definitely take your advice and try to get into the courses I need.
