I have this problem. I took my gen chem class first semester. I got a very good grade, but I did not go to any office hours or get to know the prof because I didn't think I'd get a good grade so I thought it'd be a waste of time. I know I made a mistake. However, I did get to know the TA really well, but she's not as qualified to write a rec. Any ideas for how to get to know the prof at this point? Any strategies or things to say to set up to meet with him? I will be a chem major so that might help. Any help is appreciated.

You will have many more chances to get LORs. I would suggest not getting one simply because you got a good grade if you don't have a raport with the professor. The option always exists for the TA to write one and for the professor to cosign it if you insist on getting one.

Some pre-health committees prefer letters from people later in your undergrad career anyway. You might want to find out if your school's committee has such a recommendation.

Edit: You can also try to get into more of his classes in the future and start standing out at that point, if you like the guy.

well maybe you should ask if there is a possibility of you researching under him. at the same time say that you were in his genchem class and did very well and are interested in his working in his lab(blah blahblah). another possibility is to forget about this prof and build relationships with your current/next profs........good luck

Ah! Good idea!

Let it go, don't put too much effort into this one when you will have plenty of chances to get good LOR's. Just think of how much better an LOR would look from a higher level class. Why kiss gen chem ass when you could kiss o chem ass? Good luck!

you really dont need to get to know your professors to get a rec, i asked my orgo professor who i'd only gone to see a couple times for exam regrades, he had me come in and sit and talk with him for like a half hour, and then he said he'd be more than happy to write me one, good social skills of course make this a much bigger possibility

this was mainly just to fill a gap, you definately want one or two of your recs to be from professors who you know better

Get the TA to write the letter. Get her to sign it by the professor 👍
