Hey guys,

I am graduating early in December from college and will start med school next Fall. I wanted to do some research (clinical) for my semester off. Does anyone here know of any good programs I can apply to or any other suggestions for what I should do with my semester off?

Thanks

If you've been accepted to med school already and are finishing a semester early, I suggest traveling. Go do something exciting now because you probably wont have time once you start med school.

It's really hard to get into clinical research. It took me months just to find my current job, and that was based on the understanding that I'd be here for a full year. You might want to look for something else more feasible. Basic science research is obviously a possibility, if you're interested. Do you need a job to make money? Otherwise, traveling or just hanging out and learning something cool would probably be my choice if I were in your situation. How about learning medical Spanish, or something like that? You could volunteer somewhere and take a course, or pick a huge pile of books to read while volunteering during the day. I'm sure other people will have some creative suggestions 🙂

I definitely agree that traveling is great, but getting into some clinical research shouldnt be too bad. Where are you located? What med schools, academic hospitals are around? Are you willing to work for free?

Someone here should be able to plug you in.

travelling is great, but have you ever considered doing nothing? just indulging in hobbies, learn arts and crafts, volunteer at a hospital, spending time at the beach, play with your dog/cat, bothering your friends at work, get a job at a store you really like just to get discounts?

I agree with the "do something non-academic posts". Remember you're going to be in school for several more years, then there's residency, then ...

There won't be a better time to relax any time soon.

I am in the same position (graduating in december) except I would like to earn some money as I have none right now. I would also like to learn spanish for obvious reasons.

Thanks to all offering advice, you have no idea how nice it is.
I am from New Jersey, so if anyone has any specific recommendations, i would LOVE to hear from you! 🙂

Travelling sounds like a great idea. I think you should travel, you worked hard and things payed it off. Take a little break. Why not do both? Whatever you choose, good luck.

Totally agree with some of the above post. Travel if your financial situation allows it, or work to save up some money for med school tuition or something...

If you are already accepted, why would you wanna do research for your semester off? There is no need to impress adcom anymore 🙂
