Okay,

I am graduating with a B.S. in Biology. I took a Kaplan course for the April MCAT. I made a 6 on B.S. For the August MCAT, I have Audio Osmosis and more Kaplan subject tests, but B.S. is still kicking my butt. Can someone suggest any study methods for me. I know the material really well, but the topical tests still kick my butt. Help.

Do you have any idea what specifically is going on? Since you have a degree in bio, I'm wondering if perhaps you're skimming over the passages and bringing in outside information instead, which is almost always bad news on the MCAT!

If you haven't done it already, I'd suggest going over the practice tests you've taken and seeing why you missed the questions you missed. Were you trying to make the questions harder than they are, or bringing in your more advanced knowledge? Or were you missing stuff that's in the passage? Or failing to think through the synthesis/analysis questions?

i memorized the entire kaplan bio book by making flashcards for every single thing i didn't know (except for the glycolysis chapter)
and it was good enough for a 14, so if i were you i'd break out the flashcards and start chipping away chapter by chapter

I was in the same boat you were while taking the Kaplan Full lengths, topicals, etc. I do not have a MS in Biology though. Suprisingly, I scored higher than I ever did on the MCAT (8). However, I was still disappointed. Therefore, I got the Audio Osmosis and listened to them AFTER reviewing. They were basically to reinforce the material and help me understand it better. Then I got the EK 1001 problems. It is GREAT!! I can't say enough about it. Also, I have started to immerse myself in the passage. I used to skim through it and use outside knowledge and like others have said thats not a good idea. This has worked for me in improving my knowledge and score so it may help you.

Good Luck 🙂

Yea Biology is killing me, and I am a Biology major...i'm stuck on a score of 6! I need to learn how to interpret these damn graphs. Hopefully in about 2 weeks I can put this thing up. If you guys have any tips or suggestions please share.

Hm the best advice I can give on this is if you can defer the MCAT and take upper division classes. Biochem, Micro, Embryo, Physio, Endocrin, Neurophys all helped me a lot. I was able to do most of the Bio tests (AAMC, Kaplan, TPR and Examkrackers) cold.

Otherwise I recommend the time tested bio major trick of cramming. Just memorise as much material as you can and regurgitate.

usually when i look at a bio passage i check to see whether or not i am familiar with the material. if i'm familiar with it, i just try to tackle the questions and go back to the passage when i'm stuck. i think the best way to do well is to read carefully when doing unfamiliar items such as graphs and experiments. don't worry about the timing just yet, master the concept then worry about the timing. btw, i'm using tpr science workbook for my bio.
