Hey guys!

I am a med student in the southeast and need some help putting together my rank list. I see myself gravitating towards a fellowship in cardiothoracic surgery or plastic surgery, but would like to go to a center that keeps my options open (pediatrics, surg onc, etc.). I am not too picky about location.

Basically, I am just wondering if you see any red flags in the list that I have put together. Are there some programs that should be ranked much higher? Are there some that should definitely be at the bottom of the list? I would appreciate any input that you have!

Which Rutgers? Njms or Rwjms? Big difference in those two programs.
I interviewed at RJNMS for a prelim position . IMG hoping to secure categorical gen surg position later. Any input on this issue from your experience?

If you think you might want Peds or Surg Onc, it would be best to rank places that have those fellowships at or near the top of your list. You're also likely to need research for these fellowships as well. For CT and Plastics, research isn't as important. For those, having a CT or Plastics training program at the same location would be helpful as well.

As for the CT programs from what I see on your list, I'd move Cedars up. I've heard only so so stuff about tOSU's CT program.

In general, I would put academic programs higher on the list than community programs for the connections and prior record of placement to different programs. In the end, though, alot of it comes down to where you feel comfortable with the program and where you could see yourself living for the next 5-7+ years. Which group of residents did you seem to like meeting and talking with while you were there? Those questions are pretty important when it comes down to ranking programs.

In general, I would put academic programs higher on the list than community programs for the connections and prior record of placement to different programs.

Would you rank higher:

academic program without CT/Plastics training program at same location + minimal recent placement to CT/Plastics programs

or

community program with recent placement to CT/Plastics programs?

Is that going to change as traditional CT and Plastics spots get replaced with integrated ones?

I would probably place the academic program without CT/Plastic ahead of the community program for the most part. There are some community programs that are strong and place people in good fellowships, but in general academic programs give you more options.

As more traditional spots fade away in place of integrated ones, they will get more competitive, but I'm not sure that research would still be absolutely necessary for CT or Plastics. It certainly can't hurt, though.
