I need help planning my trip to UConn at the end of January. I've never been to the northeast before (i'm in san diego) and I have no idea how to get around. ANY tips are helpful. How's the public transportation system? In the email I got, they said to fly into Bradley Int'l Airport. How can I get from the airport to the university? Are there buses, trains, etc...And is it hard to drive if there's snow? lol (I know, sorry hehe). And btw, i'm not 21 so I can't rent a car. My sister said she would see if she could get a few days off work to come with me and help out. but we'll see.

I'm grateful for any help! Thank you!

I'm from CT, and the public transportation there is little to non-existent. If you can't rent a car, you're best bet will be to take a cab from the airport to where you are staying. Bradley is about 30 minutes away from the school in Farmington (and be sure to specify Farmington to the driver, because the UConn undergrad is in Storrs, which is in a completely different direction). I would also contact UConn to see if they offer some sort of shuttle from Bradley (it's not likely, but it's worth a shot).

P.S. Yes, it's hard to drive in the snow, especially if you're from SD. That's why I'm recommending a cab 😉

I think the minimum age to rent a car in CT is 25 anyhow. In the email from Ms. Francini there are several methods of travel (cab being the easiest by far) and recommendations for lodging. Cab fare from Bradley to Farmington runs from $40-$50 one-way.

If you have no problem splurging, go for the Mariott, because it's about a 5 minute drive to campus (10-15 min. in the snow). If you ask the front desk, they may be able to arrange a shuttle for you as well.

If you want to go the cheap route, stay with a student (a list of students willing to host should have been included in the email), and if you ask really nicely, maybe s/he will pick you up from the airport. :>

Cab is the only way to go if you can't rent a car, unless the Farmington Marriott offers a shuttle to the airport... that might be an option. A cab could be expensive if it is rush hour since you will drive through Hartford. I'm sure between UCONN admissions and the Marriott they can find some way to get you to the campus. It is truly about 5 mins by car, but not easy to walk.

Good luck on your interview and enjoy the visit to CT.

I'm staying with a few friends at UConn Med at the moment (decided to revist a few schools over break). Anyway, getting from the airport to anywhere in Farmington is $50 flat fee (not including tip). Trips over 15 miles are charged a flat rate of $2.50 per mile. This is a quick and easy, albeit expensive, way to get to UConn Med.

There is a bus service of some variety that is much less expensive and will take you from the airport to Hartford. It is possible that doing this and taking a cab from Hartford to Farmington would save you a few bucks, but it is more complicated and less certain.

Also, if you want a taxi from the airport you have to go to the taxi stand and then tell them you need a cab, where you are going, etc and then a taxi comes a few minutes later. Every other airport I've been to has taxis already lined up. Odd.

Best of luck.
