Depends on the PD and what they value. Networking is essentially another LOR. If someone (whom the PD values)is willing to stick their neck out for you and recommend you that usually carries a lot of weight.
 
Networking can be massive in some situations. If you have a solid connection, it can land you a spot in a program when you might not have even matched otherwise. I’ve personally heard of several of these scenarios.

I don’t think research holds all that much weight imo. Maybe for a few PDs at programs that didn’t interview me lol

This has been discussed many times before.
Honestly if you have the time then go for it. If you start early in undergrad you can end up with a small list of co authored publications. This can’t hurt you, only increase your chances of getting in. Is it absolutely necessary? No.

Your main goal is to do the best on your academics and CBSE. Next is your externships. Research would follow after these.
