Hi, I'm in fifth grade and really want to be a doctor. I've wanted to be a doctor since 2nd grade, and I'd like nothing more than to go into a profession that saves lives and makes a lot of money. I'd really like to be a Neonatal Cardiothoracic Surgeon, and want to get into the best med school possible. What should I be doing right now to make sure I can get into med school? Also, what types of residencies are required for neonatal cardiothoracic surgery?

Thanks 🙂.

Hey, I'm a 9th grader in high school. All you should be doing right now is getting the best grades you can, and being on your best behavior. You may want to go to your local library and pick up some books on basic anatomy/biology. This won't necessarily prepare you for Medical school, but its a start. To be a Neonatal Cardiothoracic Surgeon, you have to first take a Residency in General Surgery, then another in Cardiothoracic Surgery, then a fellowship in Pediatic Heart Surgery. Although there are some 6 year Integrated Residencies in Cardiothoracic Surgery, but you still have to do the Fellowship. Good Luck!

Not gonna lie the fact that you spelled cardiothoracic right as a 'fifth' grader makes me assume that you are a troll. 🙄

You're in fifth grade. To be perfectly honest, the only thing you should worry about right now is to have good study habits. When you get to high school, work on getting into a decent undergraduate college with your grades and extracurriculars. When you're about to enter high school, come back to this thread to ask for advice. Once you get to college, you can start worrying about medical school. Right now, though, just worry about getting good grades and enjoying life. Maybe try a sport or club, even.

Good trolls are subtle and entertaining. You are neither!

I wanted to live under the ocean in fifth grade. No joke.

No amount of preparation, even in "basic" anatomy/biology, will prepare you for medical school. Forget about what you've said about that being "a start". It's not. It's a complete waste of time.

EDIT: OP, perhaps you might enjoy this forum instead: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/ 🙄

Amazing. He knows he's going to HMS, but not undergrad?

Don't do anything to prepare. You are in 5th grade, for God's sake. Any anatomy/biology books you would attempt to read would be greek to you. Enjoy your life and worry about all this stuff in 10-15 years.

You're in fifth grade. To be perfectly honest, the only thing you should worry about right now is to start establishing relationships with girls that you think are gonna be hot in high school, have good study habits. When you get to high school, work on getting into a decent undergraduate college with your grades and extracurriculars. When you're about to enter high school, come back to this thread to ask for advice. Once you get to college, you can start worrying about medical school. Just follow the bold text I added...and you will be fine!

Edit: why didn't I do this?

Venom that is forsur the best advice i've heard on this entire board.

Legit: Be a teacher's pet and get good grades. Do your homework and read non-fiction books in your spare time, but most of all just play a lot and enjoy your childhood.

Troll: 4/10 for sig.

5th graders posting on sdn. What has the world come to?

May I get your professional opinion on the "sponge treatment" on suds?

By 5th grade, most people are already working toward getting into medical school. This means you're late in the game. I suggest you apply primarily to D.O. and some Caribbean as backup.

OP, what are your practice MCAT scores?
