Matched into a fantastic (at least I think so
) fellowship last year and just about to wrap up my 4th week of fellowship. So far it feels like being in a candy store and a boot camp at the same time -- it's awesome being able to just focus on two subfields of medicine that I actually care about but the learning curve is insanely steep. I am reading at least 1-2 hours nightly to prepare for clinic which is paying off, but it's a big time commitment and I never did this for residency lol.
I am an AMG, had abysmal steps (below average on every test, 200s for step 1), mid-tier residency, and matched into a competitive fellowship. Went to 12 interviews and matched at #1. Feel free to ask any interview/rank questions
Some basic advice:
1. Please don't be a tool at your interviews / interview dinners.
2. Be friendly to all of your co-applicants. The interview trail was really fun and I loved meeting all the people (one from the other side of the country actually became my co-fellow lol)
3. Be patient. I got invites all the way till early September.
4. I hope by now you have had enough experience with interview invites from residency application process to have it pop up on your phone as a notification when they come in. The early bird gets the worm.
5. Really try to see if you can be happy in the location that you're interviewing in. I don't mean the program. I mean the city and the surrounding area (try to find some time before/after the interview -- I tried to save a couple of hours every time I traveled to a different city to explore pre- or post-interview, and I think it paid off). I took a gamble with my SO and moved to a different geographic region and so far we love it. I realize that despite being a first year fellow, I still only spend about 10 hours at work each day and there's plenty of free time outside of work for exploration. Quality of life is important!
