How difficult is it for a DO student, after completion of an IM residency (DO or MD), to be accepted into a heme./onc. fellowship? I have preliminary interests in medical oncology and I will be starting an osteopathic medical school in the fall. I understand that oncology is a research oriented field, hence at first glance there may appear to be a lack of correlation between DO's and medical oncology. Despite this, I still, at least right now, aspire to be an oncologist. I do know a DO who is an oncologist, he is actually the one who sparked my interest in osteopathic medical school. I am just wondering if my being a DO oncologist is an extreme exception to the majority of practicing oncologists in the U.S. Anyone have any insight with regards to this? Thanks!

In general this is not a very competitive fellowship and should readily available to most MD or DOs who have completed a satisfactory IM residency. Most fellowships are clinically oriented so research skills are an asset but not essential. Now if you want to get into the very top programs it will be highly competitive.
