Just wondering how long of a commute some of you have, and what's considered "doable" not only for classes (1st 2 years), but also to attend rotations (last 2 years).

If you live within 10 minutes of COMP you're not allowed to post to this thread.

Ok, so i'm techinically not allowed to post here, since i only live 1 mile from school... BUT, all first year, I lived in Rancho Cucamonga, which is a good 20 miles or so from school. I go to class most of the time, so commute was a big issue with me. Luckily, I carpooled every day with my roommates and neighbors who are also in my class. With a carpool, it's doable, because of the special lane you get to use that typically has much less traffic issues. I wouldnt recommend that drive without use of the carpool lane. Even with a carpool though, sometimes it took us upwards of 30-40 minutes to get to school, which ultimately got old and my roommates and I moved much closer. Ironically, I go to class much less this year despite living closer.

One of my classmates hauls over from Sherman Oaks in the L.A. area which is about 50 miles away. He has no problems with the drive and doesn't plan on moving closer. He drives against traffic though so it takes him about 40 minutes.

I've lived in Rancho since first day of classes, and, taking the 210 instead of the 10, it usually takes me 20-25 mins to get to school.

Living in Rancho really paid off during rotations, as mine were at Arrowhead, San Bernadino, Riverside, Montclair - very central to a lot of the rotations, but a slam dunk to none.

Rancho is a pretty convenient place to live, though it has no soul.

Are you talking about Rancho Cucamonga?
And, what do you mean that it has no soul 😀

Quite a few students live out in the beach cities and they drive 40-60mins to get to school. Many don't come to school often, including the ones that live nearby. Once you get the hang of it, you could do the same and stay home more with your kid. You could just listen to the lectures online at 2x speed, get the notes off of Blackboard, and I know my classmates send each other emails on a daily basis with personal notes/tips/study info to help each other out.

So I'd say if there's a neighborhood that you absolutely want to live in, don't let that extra 10-20 mins driving distance deter you.

I live 30 miles from school and commute everyday. (Takes me about 30 min each way). The good thing is that my drive to or from school is always against traffic. (I live west from WesternU). I think it's manageable. Waking up about 1.5 hrs before class is what I do.

I know quite a few people (either 1st or 2nd years) who live around my area who also go to COMP. I don't think it's that bad.

Living at home saves me money from rent. You have to find a balance between good distance from school and good deal from housing.

Good luck!

Just remember, as long as you're in SoCal, your "20 min" commute can be anywhere from 10mins-2.5hours. Either way, you'll do it. Good luck!

I guess I can forgive Fish for posting on here, since there was a relevent point.

I figured there were probably alot of people who were commuting 30+ minutes since COMP isn't strict on class attendance. I will likely be one those that takes advantage of the internet resources and spend more time studying at home.
