Hey, all! I actually left so cal this morning for Houston and got a message on my cell phone from Katie (I didn't pick up becuase I didn't recognize the number and was roaming!.. lame of me). I LOVE Michigan and was so stoked. BUT.. :( I was already thinking that I would go to UCI and started growing all attached, especially to the tuition! Any thoughts? I would looove feedback please! Would it be totally foolish to turn Mich down for UCI? Vice versa?

BTW - I wrote them a letter of interest.

take some time to think about it...i definitely noticed a trend among my friends where they all became attached to the first school they got into. it's an evil trick. :)

u mich will be much more expensive, and the weather may be a shock, but the facilities are great, the reputation among residency directors is really good, and ann arbor is a fun college town with a lot of culture and diversity. there are over 30,000 students, and i think about 1/3 of them are professional students, which is really cool.

congrats! i'm sure you will be happy at either place.

WWWWWWWOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOWWWZZZZZIEEEEEEEEE

congrats hawkeye! U of Michigan!!!! dang, that is such an awesome school...they didnt even bother giving me an interview :D

u go hawkeye u go hawkeye!!! wow, isn't it top 10? where do u want to be for the rest of ur life, east or west coast? because michigan opens alot of DOORS for u in the east coast...great reputation and great research, great residency matchings too!!!

on the other hand...irvine is cheap, and u have lots of sun

U of Mich is an awesome school! That is tough to give up!

WOW! That is awesome! I am only in the middle tier so I have not heard from them yet :( Anyways, I think UCI is an awesome school tho but I think in this case it would depend on your financial situation. Would you mind taking out loans to pay the difference in tuition? If you are from Cali and go to UCI I am sure you could get a great residency in Cali as well and also at other schools. On the other hand, if you wanted to get away from Cali then U Mich might be a better choice. Also, if you might be going for a more competitive residency you might go to U Mich. Personally, I would choose UCI because after having gone to college out of state, I am desperate to come back and don't really care about the rankings and I love Irvine (although some people don't  ). Good Luck tho-its a very tough decision but I'm sure you will be in a great position either way!

The main poblem with Michigan is that you are an out of stateter all four years and will pay out of state tution all four years. I would rather get out of med school with less loans. If you are not burdened with loans, you will have more flexibility in setting up your practice after you graduate. The only thing that matters to your patients is how good a doctor you are.

Apparently, Michigan is quite generous with money: an MS1 friend of mine at the school reports that EVERYONE in her class got a considerable amount that does not have to be repaid. Wait and see what the financial aid looks like. Congratulations !

Thanks for all the support guys! I really appreciate it, and can't tell you all how it brightened my day. :) I'm "on vacation" in Houston and will be going to Boston with friends and so it had been difficult to think and talk to people re: med school. Plus, my parents, though I'm sure they are happy in some sense didn't seem think much of it, ...while I was real excited and torn. I just called Katie, and she was so nice... I'll have 2 weeks to decide. Hopefully I'll be able to learn a bit more about the financial stuff. Watcha.. I'd like to set up a post, but don't really know how. I tried to do it before, but it seemed to not work. I gotta go meet a relative now, so I can't figure it out, but hopefully I'll be able to make a poll tonight. Thanks all! Please keep writing! You're the best!

Congrats, Hawkeyes. Go to U of Michigan! It would open another spot up at UCI where I'm waitlisted. <img border="0" alt="[Laughy]" title="" src="graemlins/laughy.gif" /> <img border="0" alt="[Laughy]" title="" src="graemlins/laughy.gif" /> :D

But, seriously. Go where you will be happiest, and don't just look at the money aspect. You don't want to look back 4 years later and have lots of regrets and what ifs.

congrats, haweyes   you deserve it.
U of Michigan is great school, but UCI is very close to home, huh? and cheaper too. it's tough.
Anyways, if i were you, i would stay at UCI. :D
But it would help me a little bit at UCI if you go to Michigan. :D . Just kidding.

you guys are fantabulous! this morning I just got the infamous Dr. Resnik email! (UCSD) and am totally excited, heart thumping, not sure what to do/think/say! I never thought it would happen so quick! :D

I think I'm going to rename this thread...

.... how does one rename a thread?

congrats again!!!
what a lucky and happy week for you!!!
what's is your first choice now?
btw, when did you interview at UCSD? did you get off the alternate list?

UC-Lover, I interviewed at SD 2/25 and was put into the apool about 2 weeks later. I sent in two letters in total. Best of luck! Keep the hope... looks like the UC's are really moving now! :)
