HHMI application process

A bit confused about HHMI process.

Do we first find out who we'd like to work with--and then apply? Or do we apply with several possible mentors in mind?

And our mentors do NOT have to be HHMI investigators--it's just encouraged. But are we more likely to have a successful application if we indicate we're interested in working with an HHMI investigator?

In general, how do we go about indicating who we'd most like to work with? Is it too early in the cycle to be thinking about HHMI?

You are responsible for finding your own mentor, filling out your own application, etc. You have to email one listed on their website or choose your own. The mentor decides if they want you. As their website states, you will be more successful with an HHMI investigator.

Per the website, you won't be "more successful" with an HHMI investigator but rather they are familiar with their HHMI mentors and these mentors don't have to demonstrate the financial resources requirement since they are a part of HHMI.
