Will be graduating with my bachelor of science in nursing with a minor in biology in may of 2009. I plan to work as a nurse for a few months while finishing up some pre med reqs. With my current GPA and clinical experience as a nurse will I have a good shot at one of the top carib medical schools. This is assuming I maintain this gpa and don't do awful on the mcat! By the way YES It sure does suck to major in nursing and then with five months to go realize you chose the wrong course!

I would think you would be a competitive candidate if you do OK on the MCAT. I also think you'd have a decent shot at US DO schools too, so you might want to apply to both types of schools. Particularly if you keep your grades up the last semester (cumulative GPA is a little low). The DO schools seem to value clinical experience more and have more students coming from other health professions, vs. the US MD schools which value the GPA and having a high MCAT score more. My advice is don't underestimate the difficulty of the MCAT - remember the other people taking the exam are all good students also and everyone is gunning for a high score and you are being scored against other people so it is hard to get a high score.

Even with that low GPA, the OP is competitive for USUHS if

          1. Want to serve US government
          2. Can at least score a 28 on MCAT
