Now that we're all getting acceptances, I was wondering how you are all planning to deal with acceptances at your "less desireable" schools. Do you plan to reject admissions offers right away for schools that are lower on your list? Or do you plan to place the deposit even though you think you won't go there?

Unless I utterly despise my experience at the school, I'll hold my acceptance until the FinAid packages come out. While $ isn't my most important criteria, it is important enough to lend $100 that I'll get back anyways...

I do feel bad for all those who end up on waitlists because of me, but if I have no 1 school that I fully intend to attend, why would I limit my options for stranger's benefits? Come April/May, they'll get there chance...

Wow, I sound pretty harsh above. Time to sleep. Sorry!

Some schools won't refund deposits. Not sure which ones. A student who was running the interview day at Jefferson was saying how 2 schools did that to her when she was in the process. So for those schools it probably depends on how much you like the school to begin with. For other schools I definitely agree with the above posters: wait for financial aid packages!

Agree with Brett B.

Hold 'em, especially if you think you've got a shot for money to come your way. I got a full ride to my school offered to me on the day BEFORE we had to release all our multiples.

Hmmm, now that I am reading this thread I am thinking it is not such a good idea to even turn down interviews.

It is not a good idea to turn down interviews until you get acceptances at schools that are certainly higher on your list and that you would go to *regardless* if the school lower on your list gives you a full ride. At some point if you have tons of interviews it becomes really expensive and why go through the pain if you already hold various acceptances? Most folks will go on enough interviews to get a handful of acceptances and then see about financial aid.

Why did you "utterly despise" your experience at UMich? Did your interview not go well or something? Just trying to gauge how impt the interview is. I know it varies by school. To all of you being accepted...do you feel like your interview mattered a great deal?

I think that if you get into your state school and you'd be happy there, then it's ok to start turning down interviews b/c it will probably be one of your cheaper options.

Whoa, when did I say I despised UMich? I was just talking about a hypothetical school I may find I dislike after I interview, and decide therefore to withdraw despite an acceptance. I'll hold UMich till May 15, and likely after, as its one of my top choices and there's a good chance I'll be going there. Sorry for the confusion!

So, I'm sure I'm slightly uninformed about his issue, but I've never heard of schools offering scholarships or tuition cuts to students after they accept an offer to attend (like in the FinAid package as you say). I would have thought they would include that in the acceptance letter. Is this common, and does anybody have more information on this, or is it strictly anecdotal? I would never be so presumptive as to think I would be offered a scholarship, but you never know, and it may change my decision should I be offered multiple acceptances.

Thanks

place a deposit til you get the aid package.

Is everyone suggesting this because you never know which school might offer you money to attend?

Hmmm, I didn't think any schools gave out scholarships/grants utnil the FinAid packages start going out. Take a school that's known to give out 10 full-tuition scholarships a year. If they do rolling admissions, it's unlikely that they know what 10 they want to give them to until they have handed out all acceptances. They can decide who to let in now, and in March will decide which of those to give money to.

Plus, much of the FinAid package (scholarships/grants/loans) is based not on merit, but on need, and they won't know your need until FAFSA goes out.

Basically, any school you might go to that accepts you, you should hold until May 15 or at least until you get an awesome FinAid package from a school you'd prefer to go to.

Thanks for the info!
