holidays during outpatient rotations

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Don't assume. Always ask. Holidays are school and rotation specific.

this is probably a dumb question but how do holidays work on outpatient rotations? Fourth of july is in the middle of the week this year. I am assuming for an outpatient rotation that means no responsibilities for the day?

Most likely. That being said, as a med student, you should probably be getting all national holidays off. I'd be pretty po'd if I had to work on christmas or thanksgiving as a medical student.

I think Christmas falls on a break between rotations for us. I think some holidays that don't fall between rotation breaks aren't guaranteed for us. I have been told that during inpatient stuff those holidays often aren't given here.... Dunno if that is normal or not.

I had to work July 4 on IM and Thanksgiving on inpatient peds as an M3, as well as all of rest of that week and weekend. Life goes on. There was a Christmas break though, so that was all vacation.

Students shouldn't have to work on Christmas, I agree, but any other holiday is fair game. If it's an outpatient rotation, the place is almost certainly going to be closed on any formal holiday (Labor Day, Memorial Day, Christmas, Thanksgiving, New Year's).

Agreed.

Thanksgiving and Christmas (as well as New Year's) are generally protected for students (though, as mentioned above, this depends on the school). However, all other holidays (Memorial Day, Fourth of July, Labor day, Easter) are really fair game and depend on the rotation. I got Memorial Day off for both Orthopaedic surgery and Child Psychiatry, but had to work Labor Day for Peds (Newborn Nursery) and Fourth of July for Medicine (that was a shortened day, though).

I do not personally agree with students working on any national holidays. When I become a resident, I will give students the day off on national holidays.

Sucks for those who had to work, especially on Thanksgiving as a MS3? That's one of the main times (besides Christmas) family gets together. We had the afternoon before thanksgiving off so we could travel (if necessary) to be with our families.

When I have students rotate with me in my practice, they are given any holidays off where the office is closed. Obviously that would include all major holidays and sometimes the day after. I might have patients to round on but I don't ask the students to come in.

However the best advice is as above don't assume but ask.

This. Besides the major holidays, it all depends on the school, the rotation site, and the rotation itself.

I worked this past Memorial Day on GS (took call that night as well).

Don't assume-on an outpt rotation last year I got Xmas off but no other days in December.

My school also didn't give us any holidays off. I am still pretty annoyed that I had to work the last two thanksgivings. Completely unnecessary.

Wow that is really intense... having to work on Thanksgiving Day as a med student 😱

No reason to make MS3s come in on holidays. Plenty of learning to be had during the rest of the rotation. I know this happens at some places (especially at schools who ship students all around and don't have their own hospital), but its not really the norm.

Very different if you're a sub-i trying to impress people. In that case I wouldn't even ask about it; just go in.

When you become a resident you will have no say in the matter. Holiday and day off policy are determined by the medical school and the rotation course director.

As a resident I have nothing to do with what days off med student's have and what their weekend policy is. It isn't up to me at all.
