Question out there for current Navy Physicians- I'm just curious what the opportunities are for homesteading. I'm getting ready to enter USUHS and just want to get a general idea of what life after residency will be like. I'm completely prepared to PCS every 2-3 years or whatnot, but I know at the Navy hospital I went to growing up, I often saw the same specialists, where as my PCP seemed to change every few years. Is that similar across the board? I.e. specialists tend to homestead, whereas primary care tends to not?

It's possible, but certainly not something to count on.

Easier to homestead at less desirable locations.

Easier to homestead if the command wants you to stay (be competent, take on collateral duties, don't make enemies).

Easier to homestead if promotion is a lower priority for you.

Agree with PGG. Pick a subspecialty that there are very few of and you can also likely homestead. Never any guarantees even with that as well.

This is pretty much how it seems to work for Peds. Subspecialists spend their entire career in the same MTF and generalists move every 3 years.

Thanks yall! I was talking about Navy Hospital Bremerton/Kitsap. While I would consider it desirable, I don't know if the majority does! I know there are not really any guarantees.

Barely there as in the hospital has limited services so it doesn't have as large a staff.

Yeah...I wouldn't bank on Bremerton and Pensacola being anything more than an outpatient clinic in 10 years.
