So I thought hard about this career shift into medicine and I would like some opinions on how I should approach it.

I am currently a respiratory therapist. I chose this career path because of my grandmother (RIP). I attended a vocational school to obtain my associate's in respiratory therapy. I'm currently attending the University of Phoenix (I know, poor choice in school) for a bachelor's in health administration. I was hoping to use that to get a supervisor position in respiratory care.

Now the problem I have is that I already know medical schools will not even look at my application with a bachelor's from the University of Phoenix. I want to use previous credits from a community college to transfer into a state school to finish up my bachelor's in sociology. Unfortunately, my CC gpa is a 2.165 cause of Fs and Ws. I was going through a abusive relationship at the time and dealing with endless problems in my life, including drugs and depression.

Fast forward to day...

I got my act together and started working on classes to transfer to a state school. Do i even have a chance in meeting requirements? Will adcoms even bother looking at my future application? Is it possible to raise my gpa to +3.0? Any opinions in what I cam do? Positive opinions preferred.

Transfer to a 4-year college as soon as you can. You absolutely need to maintain a 3.8 average from now on. If that means only taking one class at a time until you learn effective study habits, do that. Take the prerequisite classes for med school and make extra certain you get perfect grades in them. At that point, if you are nearing graduation and your cGPA is still below a 3.0, retake classes until your GPA with retakes is at least a 3.0. DO schools allow retakes and they tend to be more willing to take students with a checkered past but good recent performance.

If you are able to do all this, your application will certainly be considered. It will take a lot of work, but it is still quite possible for you to get into medical school. If you read the Nontrad Success Stories thread, you'll see a few stories from people who started the med school preparation process in similar situations to yours.

Finally, here's a post I often refer people to, DrMidlife's advice on how to recover from a low GPA. Basically what I just told you, only more strongly worded.

Thank you for the advice. My grades now are way better. I just need to keep up with this upward trend. Thanks!
