Hello,

I'll try with this forum to put together all the information I need and you need about Hong Kong.

Me, I'm a 6th year medical student in Europe and I'll try to take the license exam of Hong Kong in 2 years. I had a short elective in a hospital in Hong Kong last year.

Do someone got any information about people who passed the licensing examination ? I need to know what to study for the exam. I think USMLE would be good but I think it won't be enough.

Thanks in advance

Hi Yuki,
I'm first year student at an osteopathic medical school in United State and planning to go back to Hong Kong to practice. I've been communicating w/ Medical Council of Hong Kong. Here is the guide line and syllabus of the exam.
http://www.mchk.org.hk/LE2007e.htm
I'm also looking for someone who did the exam. Where and How did you get you elective in Hong Kong?
the following is a thread posted regarding the exam. Hope that would help.

Hello all. I am a medical student in hku.
For the licensing examination, I think the most important thing is to focus on the common diseases in HK which are different from UK. e.g. TB, hepatitis, hepatocellular carcinoma, etc.

Thanks Complexity.

Do you know anyone who actually took the exam? or Do you know any US med grad who are practicing or studying in HK? Is the exam harder than the normal licensing exam that HK med grads take?

Thanks, Any help would be appreciate!!!

I don't think it will be harder than our exam, as some of the examiners are professors from our university. I heard that this exam has a low passing rate mainly because of the quota.

Thanks Complexity,
So they just raise the bar on passing score? How would you think about the HK med grad exam comparing to USMLE? Is HKU a PBL curriculum? If so, how you guys do it? We in US PBL just almost cutting all lecture and only base on small group case study. Are you guys the same?

Sorry i dunno about the usmle and therefore cannot comment on it. For hku, we have both lectures and pbl in the preclinical years and mainly clerkships in clinical years.

Thanks Complexity,

Are you in clinical rotation now? In what year did you start the clinical rotation? What year are you in now? In US, we start at the beginning of the third year. Same, we don't go to school anymore after the 2nd year. I'm still in the first. I was raised in HK, so would like to come back after graduation. I still love HK so much! But MCHK says I will have to spend at least one more year in post-grad training in US(we call it residency in US) before I can take the licensing exam because med school is only 4 years in US. Don get me wrong, the 4 years is post-bac, so it takes at least 8 years for a US med student to finish med school. Really envy you guys in HK can go to med school earlier and finish much more earlier.

Sorry not to answer earlier but I have some problems with my provider of internet at home. Now I'm moving to a new one and it will take 2 weeks.

Thanks for your information but I've already got these information. I went to the office 2 years ago. The lady wasn't very nice. (it was as she was angry at me because I disturbed her...)

It doesn't surprise me that passing rate is dependent of the quota. I know that there are too many doctors in Hong Kong. (Before SARS, too many graduated students couldn't find a job) And people there prefer much keeping their own doctors than having doctors from other country. (patriotism ?)

I have one question : do you think it will be enough to pass the exam if you study the Kaplan (USMLE) ?

Hi Yuki,
Good to hear back from you. Yes, it's difficult. And, as far as I know, USMLE preperation will NOT fully equip you for HKLE. it's because:
1. Pathological focus in HK is different than in US. For example, cystic fribosis , PKU or Sickle cell anemia are very important in US clinical setting, while it's extremely rare to occur in HK. On the other hand, hep A, B, upper respiratory diseases (smoking and polution), or tropical infectious diseases are prone to HK population.
2. Part 3 in HKLE is a VERBAL exam. You don't write on the exam paper, you talk thru the exam like an interview format. No MC. That is totally different approach than USMLE is.
3. HKLE is design for doctors who had alot of clinical experiences.
4. Even for USMLE, Kaplan is not a garantee.
Are you Chinese?

Yes, I'm Chinese. Now, I'm doing my internship.
I know that HKLE is very difficult and as I guessed right, it's harder than USMLE.
I don't know if I'll succeed the exam or not but I keep confidence. I know that I won't have a lot of experience in comparison with the other candidates (who are certainly older than me) but I'll take the exam no matter what. I still have about 2 years to get ready for HKLE (before my graduation) but it's pretty difficult to manage my time between my studies and the courses for HKLE. I thank you, Metrodaily, for your information. Now I'm going to change a little bit my management.
The best help for HKLE is having an attachment in HK. But having an attachment there is another problem.

Hi Yuki,
How can you get internship even before you pass the HKLE? I asked the HKMC, they said nobody can get an internship before passing the HKLE. Did you mean a "rotation"? (Clinical Rotation in U.S. means the last two years of med school whereas med student get training in hospital for each different specialty in a short period of time.) Please give me some input, coz I would like to have internship experience in HK before the exam.
BTW, if you what more info about USMLE, I think I can help too. just email me:
[email protected]

:)

I didn't lie to you when I told you I'm Chinese and I'm doing my internship. It's just because I'm a Chinese studying in Europe. And when I get my graduation, I'm going to take the HK licensing examination.
But everything is true what you talked about the internship in HK.

The best is having an elective in HK to get some experience before the exam. But to do it, you still have to be a student (and you'll need time to get ready because it takes about 9 months to have an attachment there). If you need some information, you can ask me in this post.

Oh, very good, I AM interested in getting some electives in HK. How long is the course, what elective specialties they offer? How can I apply for it? What is the requirement?

hi guys,

I just graduated from one of the university in china and also planning to clear hong kong exam..i have gone thorugh many searches about hong kong exam and also asked many doctors for the advice about hong kong exam preparation..but unfortunately non of them gave me a positive response..all of them said it is too difficult and it is not suitable for medical student who recently graduated because they said the exam is according to more experienced doctors..and i have a friend too who had 10 years experience but failed in exam even though spending 1year on preparation. Therefore,i guide u to think twice, and still if u want to sit for exam then good luck. Anyway,if you have any questions or need any help regarding hong kong exam feel free to contact me..i can help u guys as i am in hong kong and also preparing for this exam.

One more thing about the electives,if you already graduated still you can apply for electives..it is called oberveship.Simply you have to write a letter to any hospital director indicating about your preparation for exam and for how long n which speciality. After that most of the time the director pove your application and you can start. As i am doing my electives here now .Any help need tell me i'll help you guys.

So, Yuki, in "observeship" you actually cannot have any "hands-on" procedures to the patients? If that is the case, it is what we call "shadowing" in US. Participant is not allow to involve in any treatment or medical procedures done to patients. They only "observe" what the partitioners do. It is not considered a "clinical experience" in US.
Also, honestly, USMLE is easier for you if you don't have a strong geographic preference. Moreover, you will make much more money in US than in HK. And the work in US is easier. US is pretty "open" to foreign med grad. And also you would definitely get more opportunities in career advancement in US, i.e. specialties, researches, management, or educating. Therefore, you may wanna try both.

Study in terms of med school? Rotations? Internship? or Residency?

[Hi ,
I'm a consultant Anaesthetist from India.
I completed my MD Anesthesia and Critical Care in 2006.
Can you tell me How do we people apply n what are the job prospects n salary?
Thanx.

Yuki,
I just joined this network and saw your thread, which i find quite interesting. I don't know if your question's been answered already since it's been a while you posted your message.

may i ask where in Europe you did you medical degree?

I am currently studying in Hong Kong but actually want to move abroad to practice, preferably US, Canada or Europe.

To practice in Hongkong I'm sure you already know you need to pass the licensing exam set by the Medical Council here. Also, you need to be fluent in Cantonese.

Is there anything specific you need to know lately?

Does anyone know anything about the USLME, i.e. when's best to take the different parts (is it during your primary medical degree or after?)

how best to revise for the individual parts of the USMLE?
Are study books like "Kaplan" good revision material?

hi! could you help me?
i just graduated DDM. can i apply application to sit lisence exam of hong kong without own registred lisence? and how to make 5years education because our med school have only 4years course?

i am very serious please help me thanks

any success stories at all?

Hello, I am new to this forum... found this when i was searching for information about the HK licensing exam.. from what I've heard and gathered from this forum, it's an extremely tough exam with shockingly low pass rate. Im planning to sit for this exam in 2009, meaning i have a year (or only a year) for preparation.. problem is... i have no idea as to what materials I should start on. obviously textbooks would help but does anyone know if those Pastest books (for finals) from the UK help? or are they not sufficient for this exam purpose? I have tried searching online but I don't seem to get any past papers/sample questions for this exam.

I appreciate any help and advice regarding these queries... thx =)

Hi,

This post is mainly for the US medical grads planning to take the HKMLE(licensing exam). I am also a US medical graduate. I took the professional knowledge/written portion of the HKMLE and fortunately, passed the exam 9/2008. There is a scarcity of information on this exam. You can contact the HK medical council licentiate committee to get a rough syllabus. Basically, it is a 2-day 240-question exam. Multiple choice format (single best answer). Roughly, the distribution is SURG 30%, MED 35%, Peds 15%, OBGYN 15%, and the rest are miscellaneous disciplines i.e. basic science, psych, trauma/ortho, community medicine/ethics, etc. They sent out ~10 sample questions 2 months prior to the exam.

Like a few other forum members in this thread, I think USMLE preparation is inadequate. I prepared for the exam as though I am trying to pass MRCS (surgery), MRCP (med), MRCOG (ob), MRCPCH (peds), MRCPysch (psych). These are US board equivalents in the UK system in each specialty. You need to score 50% of higher in the exam as a whole AND 40% or higher on each day of the exam. My advice is to be well-rounded in each discipline. Don't rely on a single revision source as the HKMLE is a mix of these exams. Online sources like pastest, 123 and onexamination can be useful but don't match up exactly with the difficulty level of the HKMLE in each specialty.

My only pearl is to read broadly. For reference, I included a list of books that I used to prepare for the test. I don't know if any of these books alone is "first aid" caliber, but as a whole, they gave me the preparation I needed. I hope this is helpful to the US graduates(or maybe non-UK graduates) out there who, like me a year ago, is trying to figure out what to do to pass.

Best of luck

Momo

Hi all,
i'm new to this forum.i’m doing 5th year medicine in armenia(eastern europe).i’m a temporary resident of hong kong andso i have planned to do hkmle after completing my studies in 2010. I just roughly know about hkmle that it consists of 3steps. So can you give me some details about how the exam is conducted, which books can i reffer and about the fee for the exam. Is there any restriction like 3 attempts for the exam like in some country. Pls tell me all the details that you know about hkmle so that it would be helpful for me. If any of you are in hongkong i’ll be coming there around the middle of june and if possible we can meet. Thanking you.

I am a medical student in canada and want to do my Residency in Hong Kong. How can that work out? Any input will be appreciated.

Dear Momo,
Thanks for the list of books below. I am a US pediatrician and will be taking the HKMLE this September. Didn't see any threads on this, but sorry if I missed it - any suggestions on where I can buy these books? I am in HK right now so I will check out the bookstore at HKU, but wondering if there is another store or on-line site I should be checking out?
Thanks again and hope the clinical exam went well!

Hi Med student2009, I'm wondering if you have any info about how to apply for internship / residency in HK after graduating from US/canada med school.

Also, it would be much appreciated if anybody has info on how to do electives in HK as a US med student (during 3rd and 4th years).

Thanks alot!

Can anyone suggest study books for the clinical part of the HKMLE? I bought First Aid for the USMLE CS2 and 3, but I am thinking those may not be enough... Is there a clinical MRCP equivalent?

Btw, in case anyone is interested, I took and passed the written part of the 2009 HKMLE in September. Per Momo's advice, I used mainly the MRCP books. However since I only had 3 weeks to study, I used only Essential Revision Notes for MRCP, Essential Revision Notes for Part 2 MRCOG, Crash Course: Obstetrics and Gynecology, and Essential Revision Notes in Surgery for Medical Students (least helpful). For practice questions I used the MRCP 2 Practice Questions Books 1-3 and the one for HIV/ID.

Good luck!

Congrets for having passed the written part. I will take the HKMLE in the future as well. Would u mind sharing your experience on how to prepare the written part? How was this year's paper like in terms difficulty? Do you still remember some examples of questions that could share with us? coz i dont have any ideas about how broad and in depth are the MCQ.......I would appreciate if you could kindly help!

Hi all. How is the clinical exam like? Is it OSCE, or does a panel ask you questions and you answer, or both? What language(s) is it conducted in?
