Hi--new poster here. Having been told that applicants for the July start date
for Hopkins MPH (Dec. 1 application deadline) would be notified of their decision generally within 5-8 weeks, I'm starting to check the mailbox each day with a little more apprehension.

Has anyone heard back from them yet?

Thanks!

In my experience, they were on the slower side of average. Don't worry yet - it's not yet 6 weeks since the deadline. 🙂 If it gets past 8 without you hearing anything, give them a call. Good luck!

I know guys, its a bit foolish to be asking this on the forum, but can anyone explain to me as to what is the tution fees at John Hopkins for international students as I am not able to figure it out! 😳 😳 😳 😳 😳
At one place I read that it is $7740 per term, but at another place I remember reading that the cost is close to $40,000. an eraly reply in this regard is eagerly looked forward to. Thanks for the replies in advance!

The tuition at Johns Hopkins is currently $7740 per term, but they have a wacky schedule that features 8-week terms. So in a regular academic year (August-May) there are 4 terms.

MPH students doing a one-year program often start in the summer, before "1st term" begins, which adds summer tuition as well. This yields a total of about $38,700 for the full MPH program. Next year, this will go up to about $41,000.

(Don't feel foolish; this is absolutely unclear from the MPH program website: http://www.jhsph.edu/studentaccts/tuition_and_fees.html. The totals are shown at http://webapps.jhu.edu/JHUniverse/i...l_aid/graduate_non-doctoral_tuition/index.cfm if you scroll down the page to the appropriate program.)

Namazu, thanks a lot. This answers all my queries. Any clue on what is the funding scene for MPH at John Hopkins, especially for international students?

hey,

got an admission letter from JHSPH for the MPH program about a week ago

Hi there,

This is a bit beyond my area of expertise, but I'll share what I know/my impressions... Namely, that funding in the form of outright scholarships is pretty difficult to get because of the number of well-qualified applicants. There are a number of scholarships reserved for students from developing countries, though I don't know if that applies to you or not. There are also some scholarships for people in particular areas of interest, for example, eye diseases or maternal and child health. This is one thing that the website and the promotional booklets do describe in some detail if you look around a bit.

Another possible source of funding is a traineeship. These are also offered in particular areas of public health, like cardiovascular epidemiology. Depending on your interests, you might see if you qualify. (I'm not sure if these are intended for MS/PhD students or if MPH students can also get them.)

Finally, there may be funding if you can find a faculty advisor who can pay you to do research. This would probably require a visa that allows you to work legally in the U.S.

Hope this helps!

HI all,

Since you all seem to know about the Hopkins program, can you fill me in on what stats are average for an accepted applicant? I searched all over their website and couldn't find anything. All I know is that they look for prior experience or an advanced degree... Can you all fill me in on more or point me to better resources?

Oh and maybe I should also add - I'm interested in possibly taking a year off after either my 2nd or 3rd year to do the MPH. I couldn't discern from the website whether JHU even allows that, or if you must already have a degree?

Thanks! 🙂

Congrats on your acceptance--are you accepting the offer or waiting for news from another school?

I received an acceptance letter on January 11th. I'm thrilled and will be accepting!

Hi there, Congratulations to you too! I am definitely accepting. Have you already enrolled? Where are you from?

Only an idiot will refuse an admit in JHSPH, as it is the number 1 school of public health in US>

..There is nothing worse than a hasty judgement, and nothing could be more unworthy of the dignity and integrity of a philosopher than uncritically to adopt a false opinion or to maintain as certain some theory which has not been fully explored and understood. (Cicero) 😛

People do pass up the opportunity of going to Hopkins, inspite of its status as the "Number 1 school". These especially include those not as financially gifted as, possibly, you. I agree with those who refuse going to a place simply because they cannot afford it. They are sure to find other places which give similar knowledge.

At my school, I paid $10,000-ish for the first sem, not including cost of living, and on the whole will be paying only $4000 this sem because they awarded me a Full Tuition Waiver. Third sem onwards we are guaranteed an Assistantship..Long story short, I will be completing my MPH from a great place for Half (even if I don't get an Assistantship where I will be earning) the cost of a year at Hopkins....Any education is only what you make of it, no matter how high the school is "ranked".

Furthermore, accept all ranking with a pinch of salt. I am not saying JHSPH isn't a good school. All I am saying is that going to another place is always an option, inspite of the admission. just because they think you are good enough for them doesn't automatically make them good enough for you 🙂 ...And greaper, don't be so hasty in dismissing those who consider factors apart from the "rankings" as "idiots".

By the way, CONGRATS to those who did get accepted into JHSPH, as well as any other school! 👍 And for those who haven't heard yet, Good Luck!! :luck:

Hi all! Congrats on your acceptances to Hopkins! I'm still waiting to hear back, although my application slid in just before the Dec. 1 deadline, and I received a confirmation e-mail on 12/21 (my advisor was a bit late in submitting my recommendation, it's a long story!) so it might still be too soon to expect anything. Runaway train and Giscon, since you've already heard - did you apply well in advance of that deadline? Just curious, anxiously awaiting, stalking the mailbox...

Thanks!!

hi pr.usmle,
congrats on your admit.. i'm a doctor from india too..though i do not have residency plans and am planning a career in public health..as to jobs after graduation, its tough coz different sources say different things... i've left it to getting to hopkins and examining the job opportunities from there.. have you already received your I 20?

Ya, if sumone has any idea of the job that you get and the renumerations paid after you graduate from hopkin's, please help us guys out.
thankzz.

hi there
i recently heard from JHSPH. but i dont have funds to join the school. does anyone know of loans for international students? or any other way out? what r the chances of my getting some campus-job etc to see me thru?

the schools i've looked at in canada the mph program is two years or close to it. But I found a graduate certificate program in population health assessment and management..do you guys think it will be considered similarily...or will I be at a disadvantage since its not a masters, when applying to med school.

I'm interested specifically in this program, especially the part-time/online version, which I would like to complete during residency (if at all possible, who knows...)

For those accepted, could you post your stats? I also noticed that they require MCAT scores - how heavily is this weighted vs. GPA vs. other degrees i.e. MD/experience...seems unclear to me...I'll graduate with the MD in 2008 and my MCAT score will be pretty old, will I have to write the GRE? thx
