Holla...

Is it too early to start a Hopkins Waitlist Thread? Since interviews are now over, I thought people might be getting anxious about the rankings that are coming out later this month.

Anybody hear anything interesting lately?

Anyone know what the alternate list is?

It's basically the Waitlist.

Post-Interview, you were either placed on the "Alternate List" or put on the low waitlist (which is a nicer way of saying you're rejected, chump!)

Those who are on the Alternate list are then ranked into three tiers in April... if you're at the top, you're pretty much in... bottom two, probably not.

When in April are we supposed to find out what waitlist tier we're in?

They say in the Waitlist letter "end of April." If you do a search, the rejections came in the third week and the higher tiered letters came in the fourth... so I wouldn't expect anything for at least another 2-3 weeks.

anyone know if we should send in update letters now? as in, can we influence our position on the waitlist tier?

or should wait to find our which tier we're on, then send in bribes/goats/firstborns?

I hate to be the one answering all the questions (since this is a forum), but when I spoke with Dean White 2 weeks ago, he told me not to send in any update letters.

He said the waitlist tier is ranked based off your original application, so it wouldn't help much.

Intriguing point.

Edit - Since we're on the topic of 'intent': Pun intended.

So I take it that nobody has heard anything interesting lately?

i just called the admissions office, according to the lady who answered the phone, the alternate letters were sent out yesterday (i assumed these were the non-rejection letters).

however, i asked whether those letters contained classifications for divisions, and she adamantly denied that hopkins does any sort of tiering...

can anyone verify this?

It's really hard to believe that she would say this, especially since there's nothing no reason to hide the fact there is a ranking system. I've heard of places like Vanderbilt hiding the fact that there is a ranking, but I don't see a reason why Hopkins would... it's pretty well known that there's a tiered waitlist...

yeah i figured too Doko, she sounded very reluctant to say anything though, and i felt kind of embarrassed that i was pressing the issue...

I interviewed back in September, but I remember them saying they would give out waiting list rankings in April.

Well, if you do a search fxn on Hopkins Waitlist, you'll see that typically, the rankings aren't mailed out until the 28th or so (the rejections coming a little earlier than the high/middle tiered letters).

I'm really surprised that the letters are being mailed out this early though...

It's a bit suspicious... at any rate, it'll finally be good to know where I stand with Hopkins... interviewed back in September and I've been waiting for this letter for a long time now...

Am I The Only Person Who Got The Waitlist Rank Letter Today?
Did Anybody Else Get Anything?????

What's your rank? Don't worry, I didn't apply to Hopkins, just wanted to sympathize. Empathize, I guess.

No rank letter here.

no rank letter received here either... i hope it was good news Doko!

Hey Doko,

My letter just said "alternate list" . Did yours have an actual rank on it?

Sorry for the false alarm, guys! So basically, I received this thick envelope this evening, and I promised my gf that I would open the Hopkins Waitlist Rank letter with her...

So basically, I mistakenly thought this letter was the Rank Letter.

The letter I received tonight was whether I wanted to remain on the Waitlist.

This makes sense, since in the past 2 years, the rejections (low waitlist) letters came out the week of the 20th and the high/mid letters came out on the 28th of april.

Good luck, guys... and sorry for the scare!

Apologies,

Doko.

well to add another dimension of confusion to hopkins admissions, i received a letter stating that i was on the alternate list today. the confusing part is that i already *knew* i was on the alternate list, but apparently they needed to remind me twice.

or, maybe they really did get rid of the waitlist tiering? i dunno, i'm just speculating...

yeah, I got the same letter I think. The letter said they were confirming that I was on the alternate list. But I also got a form with the letter asking whether I still wanted to remain on the alternate list. As to whether we'll receive another letter with an actualy rank, I don't know... 😳

Same here. Confirmation of the alternate list letter. I'm still hoping that it means something good. Optimism is key these days. 😛

i got an "alternate" letter on 4/2 stating there would be no further correspondence until end of april and then a second "alternate" letter on 4/14 with a request to stay on waitlist or not

2 letters in span of 2 weeks, hope 3rd time is the charm! 🙂

Well, Phatib, I think you got the normal alternate letters that everyone gets.. you just got two because you probably interviewed just recently (in the last 2 months).

Don't worry... once the AdCom gets the Waitlist Interest letters back, they'll rank the candidates one more time and send out the tiered waitlist by the end of the month...

Good luck to you guys...

Doko

hey y'all,

if I haven't received a letter asking if I'd like to remain on the waitlist or not yet, should I call them and tell them that I'd like to remain? is there a turnaround deadline for letting them know that you want to remain on the waitlist? thanks!

Well, the letter said May 3rd, but I wouldn't worry too much about it. I think we got the letters early since we're in the area. They were dated 2 days ago, so I would give it another couple of days... you should be fine, since they don't start the official rank until later this month...

i hope you guys all get in, if you really want to go. i am going to the second look weekend just to make sure i'm making the right decision, but i will almost certainly be dropping my hopkins acceptance, so good luck.

I haven't gotten any mail from hopkins thus far, but i did get the email telling me i was on the waitlist. however, after checking in the mail for the card for awhile now, im scared hopkins doesnt even know i exist. is this normal???

I don't think it should be a big deal since we have till the first week of March. That being said, I do think it's off that you received an email and not a letter about the waitlist... do you interview late in the season?

Has anybody heard and/or called as to when letters are coming out this week?

hopkins is not making any sense - they sent me the waitlist letter "without the good return envelope" in january and last week i got the waitlist letter with the good-omen return envelope. what exactly is going through their minds?

Can you explain what exactly you mean by "good return?"
Do you mean that they placed you on the waitlist in January and then recently sent you a "if you want to remain on the waitlist send this in" letter?

If so, that's normal.

Okay! So I know that I'm one of the only ones who's excited about the waitlist, and from the above posts, I'm the only one posting a lot on this thread... but I'm addicted... I can't help it.

So this post below adds to the confusion. Read it ::

hey folks, a *very* good/reliable source at hopkins told me that the adcom mailed out "upper" tier waitlist letters yesterday afternoon. I believe some local students already have received these letters.

Letter has a postcard you have to send back b4 5/16 to remain on the list. Letter says that ".. based on the past history u have a very good chance of getting in.. but let us know if you matriculate at another school.. meanwhile we'll try our absolute best to notify you asap.. please call us ANYTIME w/ any questions (YEAH RIGHT!!!)"
---------------------------------------------------

So was this the "upper" tier that some of us got?
If you do a search on previous years, it seems that it specifically stated "high," "middle," or "low."

Did ANYBODY get anything else besides that return-letter that you need to send back to remain on the waitlist?

Am I only person who subscribes to this thread?

Throw me a bone here! =)

By no means are you the only person who subscribes to this thread! I'm with you every step of the way. Actually, I'll be near my mailbox hoping for something to come in the next few days . . . but I'm with you in spirit. 😉

Doko,

If that's true (that the upper-tier letters were sent out a couple days ago) then they sent the letters before waiting for the May 3 'do you want to remain on the waitlist' response date. Is the logical inference then that those of us who got the letter are not on the upper tier, since if we were they would have just sent out our upper-tier letter without asking if we wanted to stay on the list?

Hmm, Doko, is that post you were referring to from a previous application cycle? That's what I thought. I hope it isn't from this year! 😳

No, that's from a previous year. But I found two posts similar to that post on SDN threads. I'm not sure what to make of it.

I've PMed about 20 SDNers from this cycle who have interviewed at Hopkins and got Waitlisted.

EVERY SINGLE one of them got the same letter.

I'll assume that this was NOT the rank letter then. We should get something by the end of this week. =)

I'll try to call the Admissions Office today during the call-in hours and see if I can find out more information.

I'll let everyone know the dealio.

Rock on.

PS - This is one of those examples of SDN *helping* a school out, since now we don't all have to call to ask the same question.

Okay. So I called the Admissions Office today...

And they told me that they ARE NOT going to be placing applicants into the High/Middle/Low Waitlists this year... They "did away with that with this."

We just have to be patient and wait to see if we get off the waitlist. 🙁

Good luck to everyone... I don't know what I'm going to do now.

nice to know we just have to WAIT! arghhhhhh

I really think that that's not cool... It doesn't really give us a good idea of what to expect with the waitlist.

Since I'm starting med school in July, it would be nice to know if I have a chance of coming off the waitlist before I completely move to Cleveland... ya know?!

I guess they really aren't doing any tiering this year 🙄 I'm curious as to why they got rid of it. Gosh, knowing where I stand on the waitlist would have at least helped me plan a little for the summer/next year... 😳

Does anybody want to confirm what they told me and see if it's true?!
I must admit that I'm really disappointed with this whole thing.

Doko said:

Confirmed and they told me the same thing. Hopkins, that's stupid.

So if they're doing this whole unranked waitlist, does that mean there are LESS people on it this year and they decided to reject (low waitlist) people right after the interview?

Centinel said:

So that being the case, around when will they start letting people off of the waitlist? Sometime this week or only after may 15?
