How are the health insurance policies for residents? Do they usually cover most things? Do they have high deductibles?

Health insurance varies by institution. In some programs, residents pay a larger share of the monthly premium, but some programs don't ask residents to pay a part of the premium. Some programs may have only one or two plans available, but others may have 5+ plans to choose from, for example. Whether there is high deductible depends on the plan. Usually a high deductible plan will have a lower premium, and vice versa. In other words, health insurance benefits for residents are like those from any other employer. In fact, residents may have the same health insurance benefits as the program coordinators.

Thanks kchan. Sounds kind of like similar health insurance as everyone else. I guess I was hoping that because you're working in the hospital, particularly as a physician, the the rates would be significantly better than I guess visitors.

Don’t forget to ask about other benefits such as free lasik eye surgery for you and your family, free orthotics in the form of new shoes every six months for you and your family (picked from a catalog such as Nike, new balance) etc.

Thanks guys for your responses. It seems like the vast majority of hospitals require you to purchase health insurance yourself from the hospital, with the exception of umaryland who seem to provide health insurance without extra fees ( though perhaps they just deduct it from your paycheck without telling you).

University of California programs provide a compressive coverage at no cost to residents and their dependents. University of Arizona programs do that as well.
