Hello everyone,

I recently attended 2 interviews for permanent hospitalist jobs..I liked both hospitals but not sure which one to pick

First position is in a small place 4 hrs from metro I like the hospital but they have open icu, have to be in hospital from 7 to 7p, do rounding 16 to 18 pts and average 2 admits per day, run codes, no nights, 110/hr day shifts and 50k in quality bonuses per year, 30k sign on and relocation , CME 2500, 16 shifts per month, not so user friendly EMR, some consultants write paper charts

Second one is 2 hrs from metro, very busy hospital, open icu, no codes, round and go, 15 shifts per month among which 3 are nights and 6 admitting shifts where you hav to stay in hospital from 7a to 7p,good subspeciality back up, 110/hr day shift and nights 125/hr, average census is 20 pts and in winters census goes up to 25 pts per day, 20k sign in and relocation, CME 3k, quality bonus is 15k, good EMR, everything electronic

I lnow its personal preference but im so confused which one to pick..I like the second one but not too happy about salary but I can adjust..first one is also good but EMR Not good, have to be in hospital from 7am to 7pm

4 hours from the major metro area and 110/hr? I suppose that is still ~$250k at 16 shifts/month, but it's a little on the low side compared to the pay I've seen for similar jobs. The big question to me would end up being how easy it is to get the quality bonus. If most people get close to the extra $50k, I'd go with job 1 in a heartbeat. Especially given the lower census.

If the $50k is more of a theoretical and the pay at the two is pretty even... I don't know. The higher census at job 2 is a big negative, but the good EMR and the subspecialist backup might be worth that.

Thank you

50k bonus is easy to get.most of the hospitalists receive it where as in the second job offer I hear they r not pay quality bonus of 20k even though they promised in the contract and daily census is consistently above 20..

First job calculating sign on,CME, bonuses and base pay comes to 330k

If the 50k is typically easy to get, I'd go with job #1 assuming the location isn't a total dealbreaker. It pays more, has a lower census. You can read a few paper notes and you can get used to almost any EMR.

I know this is more of a personal thing, but to me 4 hours from a metro is far enough that it's not even worth mentioning the metro in the job description

4h from a metro means that place isn't really even a metropolitan area, it's just the largest small town in an 8 hour radius.

I can just see the ad for the position, advertising all the selling points:

"Conveniently located near a major city, head into the city in the early morning and make it home in time for dinner!"
"High quality auto shops to help with the wear and tear from your 400 mile per day road trips to the city!"
"24/7 phone contact with actual civilization!"
"Free wifi at the local starbucks!"
"So much more that we didn't even buy ad space to list it all!"
