Hot Topic of the 80's

I need to throw this out there because it's driving my brain crazy. In an interview last year, my interviewer brought up a "hot topic" from the 80's, and I can't remember the name. Because I do stem cell research, he asked if I thought we would eventually see a barriage of potential in the field or if stem cell research would turn out to be like (this thing I can't remember). He said it was probably a Time cover story, etc. I keep thinking prions...OBVIOUSLY not it, but maybe sounds like it?? Any ideas??
