how are the pretest books?

The quality of the Pretest series is variable with most of the books being of good quality, although I wouldn't rate any of the ones that I have come across as superb (and I have 6 books from their series). Some are fairly decent (e.g. pathophys), while others are so-so and probably too detailed for step 1 (i.e., the biochem and genetics pretest book and the anatomy, histology, and cell bio pretest book).
A number of people who have taken step 1 have complained that the available questions sources (including Q bank, which most people rate as el numero uno) are too nit picky in their questions. Well, guess what? The pretest books are even more nit picky than q bank. Which is probably why none of the books get more than a B rating in First Aid.
If you are using them for course work, however, they might come in handy, since course work tends to require more detailed knowledge. Also, on med school exams there are always a few funky questions that will get thrown your way that will be difficult to prepare for unless you have seen something similar before.

Pretest Medicine and Neurology worked pretty well for me. I didn't use any of the Pre-Test books for Step 1 or 2 though. I think there are much better resources than the Pre-Test for Step 1. If the format is what you like then Buzzword are pretty good as well, but beware it has about 60 errors
