I'm usually close to my recommenders so I'll either bring them or send them a thank you card along with a box of yummy cookies or something. I'm curious as to what everyone else is doing too.
I sent a thank-you note to professors, whom I was not very close to. I think that if you had a close relationship with that person (like a mentor), then it would be more acceptable to give a present.
Also, I strategicly sent it a month after I asked them as a nice reminder  .
Oh, I never thought of thanking them any formal way, I just sent them a thank you email (which was really a hidden reminder in case they forgot to do it in time). Today I told a recommender that I got into med school and she hugged me like she was my mother! Maybe I'll get her a little gift. Hm, what do you get for a math professor?

Math profs love that kinda stuff.
I think a thoughtful thank you note is sufficient. It's the thought that counts, and if the professor is a science person, they are used to writing rec's.
omigod, I never thought of thanking my recommenders, although, I was very good about thanking my interviewers -- a clear case of misguided priorities!! I'll get right on it!!!!
